Show Clifford E. Jones j Writes Letter j From Germany Kirch Gons, Germany j September 8, 1953 ' Dear Herald Staff: j Since arriving hero in Germany, 1 it has taken me some ,time to get j around to writing you this letter to give you my new address. Upon arriving in Germany, I ! found that it was to take some ' time before I would be given any : permanent assignment. I was pro- ! cessed through two different re- placement centers before I reach- j od my permanent station here in j Germany. I have been assigned to the Medical Med-ical company of the 22nd Inf. Regt. 4th Inf. Div. I am working as a company clerk here in the medical med-ical company. I also am planning on attending ' clerk typist school beginning the latter part of the month. Upon arriving at the camp where the 22nd regiment is stationed, I found that the camp itself is a new one. In fact, they are still working on a few of the buildings. At present it goes by the name of Kirch Gons, but in October will be given an official name. My first two weeks with the 22nd regiment was spent at a place called Wildflicken. There the troops were out on a regimental field problem. Wildfilcken is a former German army camp which was built by Hitler. Also the camp is only about 15 or 20 miles from the Russian zone of Germany. After Af-ter the problem there we returned to our regular camp for a week and at present are back out in the field on the 7th Army maneuver. This problem is the big maneuver that they hold once each year. Taking part in the Monte Carlo maneuvers this year besides the U. S. army forces are French troops and Belgium forces plus parts of the U.S. airforce here in Germany. The small amount of Germany that I have seen so far I think it is very beautiful country. Yet in the cities one can still see many of the ruins resulting from the last war. In the city of Frankfurt, which is only about 30 miles from camp, there is much building going go-ing on as there is in many cities of western Germany. ' I do wish to thank you for sending me the paper during basic. One thing that a soldier does enjoy is receiving his home town paper and reading upon what is happening happen-ing there. Sincerely, Clifford E. Jones. |
