Show II 1. Clubs Bid On lodger Hurler CHICAGO, Dec. 4 U.l! The poker game that Bill Terry, Charlie Grimm and Burleigh Grimes are playing with Van Mungo, Brooklyn's star pitcher, was high stake on a new battla-front battla-front today as the major leaguers moved here from the minor-league minor-league convention at Milwaukee. Grimes, the stubble-bearded Missouri farmer in the 'sombre black hat and inevitable pipe, has Mungo as one of his chattels, but big Van is a temperamental artist art-ist and has openely declared he'll never toss another ibaseball for the Dodgers as long as Burleigh manages the club. That makes it imperative for Grimes to trade Mungo, and Terry, Ter-ry, icy-blooded pilot of the Giants, and Charlie Grimm, clowning boss of the Cubs, are the two fellows who want him most. The Pirates, with Pie Traynor playing their hand, and the Cards, with Branch Rickey handling their chips, also in on the Mungo deal, but thus far haven't met t'ie high bids of the Cubs and Giants. Terry last night prepared the Giants' for action by selling Pitcher Al Smith, southpaw who was bothered by a sore arm last season, to the St. Louis Cardinals for an undisclosed sum of cash. In a separate deal the Giants bought Catcher Tom Padden from the Cardinals for their Jersey Jer-sey City International league farm club. Padden has never played play-ed with St. Louis, having come to the Cards recently in the deal which sent outfielder John Rizzo of Columbus to the Pirates. |
