Show ELKS TO ENLARGE ROSTERJF CLUB Lodge Engaged in Campaigns Cam-paigns for Building and Increased Membership. Subscriptions Now Total $150,000; Like Amount Still Needed. Determined that Salt Lake lodge of Klks, Xo. 85, shall become one of the leading organizations of the kind in the United States, and that tire lodge shall become a leader in civic, fraternal, social so-cial and charitable affairs of Salt Lake, members of the lodge are now engaged in two ma.jor campaigns; first, to complete com-plete the subscription list f or , a new $300,000 lodge building; second, to increase in-crease the membership to a total of 3000. In addition, the Elks have mapped out an elaborate tories of social affairs for the winter season and they are preparing pre-paring to entertain the grand exalted ruler, an affair in which the Elks of the entire state will participate. . . Money for the new building is being raised by the sale of bonds to members of the lodge. To date bonds to a value of more than $150,000 have been sold and the improvement committee, E. A. Culbertson, chairman, announces it is certain the entire $300,00(1 issue will be sold by January 1. W ork on construction construc-tion of the new building will then be started- as soon, as weather permits. The bonds bear interest at the rate of 5 per cent and are considered such a safe investment that bankers have offered of-fered to underwrite them, but the Elks are determined they shall finance the big project without outside aid. Gymnasium for Clubhouse. The new building is to be erected on Temp'o street, opposite the Uni-versitv Uni-versitv club. The site runs clear through the block to First avenue. In adidtion to the usual lodge building features the new building will have all the accoutrements of a modern athletic club, including a completely equipped gvinnasium, swimming tank and bowling bowl-ing alleys. All will be under the direction di-rection of competent instructors. For outdoor sports there will be a tennis court and croqfjet grounds and it is proposed pro-posed to encourage all branches of athletics. ath-letics. The interior arrangements w'ill provide pro-vide for sleeping rooms, dining room, dance hall, theater, billiard room and other features that will make the club complete in every detail. The membership of Salt Lake lodge has now reae hed a total of 2000. It is proposed to increase this by one-third, but it is emphatically stated by the membership committee that the increase is not to be obtained by bargain sale methods. Quality, not quantity, is the motto. The existing initiation fee is o0. This is to be continued for a brief time, when an advance will be made to fj"o or J100. both proposals now being before the members. After a membership member-ship of 3000 has boon secured, the lodge rolls are to be closed and new members will not be accepted except as vacancies vacan-cies occur. With the new building it is anticipated antici-pated the club can so increase its social, civic, fraternal and charitable activities activi-ties that membership will be worth .100 or more to any man, and the new quarters, quar-ters, although sumptuous, will not accommodate ac-commodate a membership in excess of :t"0G. Social Functions Planned. In a social way the' club is now planning plan-ning a scries of weekly events throughout through-out the winter season. Some will be for members and their ladies only, others will he open to the public. They will take the form of theater parties, with dancing and refreshments later at the club rooms, or dancing and refreshments refresh-ments at the club, or public dances at Bonneville. The next social affair is to be a carnival car-nival night at Bonneville. This will he held next Friday night, October 24. Tt is to be open to the public. Many uniquo carnival features are being arranged ar-ranged for the evening. Frank L. Rain of Fairbury, Neb., the worthv grand exalted ruler of Klk-dom, Klk-dom, and a party of twelve are to pay an official visit to Salt Lake October J. remaining here for twenty-four hours. Thev will be welcomed the evening eve-ning of October 29 at a banquet at Hotel Utah. Klk lodges at Ogden, Provo, Knroka and Park City have written writ-ten for reservations at the banquet.
