Show DODGES BULLETS Hi BEATS UPASSAIUNT Gamblers Carry Quarrel to Street and Pistol Plays Part in Fight. After escaping five bullets, said to have been fired at him from close range by Mike Ray, J. W. Johnson, proprietor of the Shel'ton soft drink parlor, 129 South West Temple street, turned ou his assailant and administered a severe se-vere beating before police officers arrived ar-rived on the scene. The affair happened at the corner of Second South and Main streets soon after 5 o'clock yesterday morning, the shooting, it is alleged, being the result re-sult of a quarrel between the men over a card game. Ray, who is 31 years of age, is said to be a "professional" gambler, and, according to the police, Johnson lost considerable money to him in a recent game. It is also asserted that Johnson had accused Ray of cheat-. cheat-. . inig at cards, which resulted in a fist .. fight, Ray being worsted. The polico assert that Johnson was informed by a friend that Ray had declared de-clared ho would "get" him, and in order to avoid trouble left his gun at the soft' drink parlor. As Johnson reached the Kcnyon hotel corner about 6 o'clock yesterday morning Ray is said to have appeared and without warning ! opened fire on Johnson. ! Pedestrians dodged into doorways and dropped to tho sidewalk to avoid the flying bullets. The officers say that after Ray's revolver was emptied without any of the shots taking effect, JohnBon closed with his opponent and at the time of the arrival of Patrolman Patrol-man E. K. Brown was beating tho man '8 face on the cement sidewalk. Ray was taken to the city jail. A complaint was filed later in the day i by the county attorney's office charging charg-ing him with assault with intent to ' commit murder. Ray was subsequently subsequent-ly released by Justice of the Peace Henry C. Lund on $500 bail. |
