Show ACCIDENTAL SHOT KILLS U. S. MAJOR CAMP LEWIS, Tacoma, Wash,, Oct. 2r. Major Alexander P. Cronkhite, son of Major-General A. Cronkhite. in command com-mand of the Eightieth division, now in France, accidentally shot himself here today to-day with an automatic pistol and died within two minutes. Major Cronkhite was in tho 213th engineers, en-gineers, arriving hero from Camp Forrest, For-rest, Ga., October 9. The accident occurred oc-curred on the pistol range. Major Cronkhite Cronk-hite had fired a shot at the target and turned to remark on the excellence of It. The words were no sooner spoken than the pistol in his hand was discharged, tho ball entering his breast. His mother resides re-sides in Washington, D. C. He graduated from West Point in 1015, one of the highest In. tho class, was assigned as-signed to the engineering corps and within a few months received promotion to the rank of first lieutenant. When the officers' training camps were established he was detailed as an instructor and had been on duty in that capacity in all four camps. His record as instructor resulted re-sulted In promotions to the rank of captain cap-tain and major. He was unmarried. |
