Show VERNON CASTLE. Vernon Castle, the most noted of American dancers, who died in an aerial dance of death, gave his life in an effort to save a cadet who was but a novice in the game of flying. Perhaps there were some captains of industry or rough-handed sons of toil who, a few years ago, looked with contempt upon Vernon Castle as one of that species of the terpsichoreau age the present era that have come to be knowu as 'Mango lizards.'' In other times a dancing master was supposed to be the most unheroic of mankind. To be a dancing master was to be a target for the scorn and derision of the sons of Mars. .When Vernon Castle, somewhat less than two years ago, abandoned his gainful gain-ful temple of dancing in Xew York to become a knight of aerial combat, the country was astonished. But he approved ap-proved himself so brave and efficient that he was rapidly promoted and was sent to Fort Worth because he long had been skilled in the arts of instruction. In fact the very qualities which had made him a master of the dance, tho sense of equilibrium, of poise, of dash, speed and the love of whirlwind dancing, had won for him swift success in aviation. Although lie died far from the battlefields battle-fields where his exploits had won him fame and admiration, he died none the less one of the heroes of the royal flying fly-ing squadron. ! I |
