Show HOWRY SENTENCED TO KANSAS PRISON . i Given a Yeax'g Imprisonment for TJsdug United States Mails to Defrand Oklaiomans. J. M. Howry, who was brought from ban Quentin prison, Cal., vesteTday after having served a vear for passing worthless checks, pleaded guiltv during dur-ing the afternoon before Judge Tillman Till-man D. Johnson in the federal court to the charge of using the United States i mails for the purpose of fraud. He was sentenced to serve one year and one day at Fort Leavenworth, prison. He will be taken east in a few davs. To a rancher in Oklahoma Howrv represented that he was the owner of a number of mining claims in Nevada, and offered to sell him a half interest in the property for a certain sum. Howry then went to California, where he issued a number of worthless checks and landed in the California state prison at San Quentin. Prior to going to California he wrote to his Oklahoma victim, and received in return between $200 and S300. He was indicted by the federal grand jury in this state nd, on being released from San Quentin. Quen-tin. was at once arrested and returned to Salt Lake. |
