Show WAGE RAISE AVERTS STREET CAR STRIKE Pittsburg Company's Decision to In-j In-j crease Fare Protested by City , Council. P1TTSBUKG, "Dec. 21 . Demands of conductors and mntormen on the street car linos of Pittsburg for an increase in wages were met late today Tvheii the Pittsburg Railways company decided upon an increase in ivaes of -'j cents an hour, effective immediately. Threats of a stiihc had been made by the men. Tn announcing the increase, the company com-pany gave notice that it Avould petition the Pennsylvania public service commission com-mission for permission to increase the fare from 5 to 5.55 cents when a book of eighteen tickets for a dollar is purchased pur-chased or a straight 6-ccnt rate for single fares. After February 1 or any time before then that the public service commission acts favorably on the petition for increased in-creased fare, it "was announced the wages of the men will be increased another an-other 2'. cents an hour. The men are now receiving 27 to ;!5 cents an hour. About ;5000 men are affected. The city council tonight by a unanimous unani-mous voto decided to enter a protest to the proposed advance in farces. |
