THE debating team of the 'West high school has been selected and is holding regular practices in preparation for the coming, debates. Tho principals chosen are Miss Caroline McMurray, Eichard Polette, Po-lette, Adolph Axelrad and Chester Dean. Wesley Ward and Ethelbert' Gleason will act as alternates. These pupils were selected out of a large number that took part in the tryoiits which were held on February 2, and the judges had, a difficult time in making the selections. The judges were Miss Ella M. Dukes, head of the English department of the East and West high schools: Eenwick W. Mc-Niece, Mc-Niece, debating coach, and Burton Musser, a local attorney. Eichard Polette is tlie only member that took part for the West high school last year. He served as an alternate and gained some valuable experience. He is a sophomore and represents that class on the student council of the Associated As-sociated Students West at present. Last year he was the chief executive for the freshman class. He will probably act as captain. Miss McMurray, Adolph Alexrad and Chester Dean are all new talent, but showed up well in the tryouts. Dean is a freshman, but nevertheless made an excellent impression in the practices. prac-tices. The other two have had a little lit-tle work in the history classes, which should aid them in their debating. This year three triangles, taking in the surrounding schools, w-ill probably be again organized. The institutions entering teams last year were We3t high, East high, Westminster college, L. D. S. university, Davis County high, Granite, Jordan, University of Utah freshmen and Bingham high. The first debate will be held on March 16 and a hard contest will prob-ablv prob-ablv take place between the schools for the" championship. The question adopted adopt-ed by all the schools is. "Resolved, That' a Minimum Wage Scale Should Be Adopted by the United States." Miss Alma "Sullivan has been coaching coach-ing the West high debaters, but has been forced to return to her home in Nebraska. B. W. McNiece, who acted as' coach last year, will be assisted bv Wendell Smootj a member of last year's team, in the coaching. |
