Sacrifice the Shirt-front Shirt-front and Eat the Starch!" That is the caption over an ironical '. article in ihe Star upon wartime economy. econ-omy. Ever since the government began be-gan announcing "war-saving" measures the Star has been a satiracal critic of them. The article on washing less follows in part: "1 Starch Is a food; "2 Wheat, sago and potatoes are largely starch; "3 Collars and cuffs and stiff shirts are wheat, sago and potatoes. Muslin, aprons and caps are potential rice puddings, pud-dings, and every family blouse means a loss of tapioca. "Consequently, in order to win the war, we must do less washing and use darker linen to match our bread." The article then goes into the necessity neces-sity of curtailing bathing, because "soap contains fat and fat is' a national asset." |
