Show MAIMED SOLDIER IS MADE BURGOMASTER Aldermen of Town Ordered by Provincial Pro-vincial Government to Increase Salary. BEKLiTN", Feb. 10. When the mayor of-TYittichenau, of-TYittichenau, a town of 1:200 inhabitants in Piiesia, resigned recently the thrifty common council of the place was of the opinion that some partly disabled war veteran might take the position at a smaller salary. The eity fathers advertised for a new burgomaster, offering- the princely remuneration re-muneration of S42.-1 per year. To their own astonishment they received twenty-six twenty-six applications, mostly from crippled officers, of-ficers, who were willing- to take the "job" because they received pensions and would be able to live with the beggarly salary which the aldermen of the town were willing will-ing to pay. After much deliberation the aldermen picked a one-armed lieutenant, but a disagreeable dis-agreeable surprise awaited them. They received a communication from the provincial pro-vincial government which berated them severely for their niggardliness. To their chagrin they were ordered to increase the salary of the new mayor appointed by them to ?"50 annually at once. |
