Special to The Tribune. BOISE Idaho Dec 12. A sensation was caused here today when s grand jury was ordered to convene in this city January i to probe into the loot ing of the treasury of this Btate on the suspicion that others besides O V Allen, former treasurer who confessed to the embezzlement of $70 000 of the state s money and who is now Berv ing an indeterminate sentence of from five to ten years in the penitentiary are Involved. The shortage is now be ! lieved to bo over $100 000 The date 1 set for the convening of the grand jury is the day of inauguration of the governor elect Moses Alexander t T Judges C P McCarthy and Carl A. Davis signed the applicat on for the convening of the spec al grand jury 1 on the petition of Attorney General J J H Peterson and County Attorney Bay f mond L QivenB In taking th s action the attorney general and the county attorney fore-j, fore-j, stall in a measure action that it has lj become well understood, Mr Alet U ander intended to pursue shortly after j 1 h s inauguration V Rumors Are Heard ' i Ever since the defalcation of Allen became an established fact through his plea of guilty there have been umo s i involving various other persons not only in connection with that office but in other departments of the state government and there has been some talk of a grand jury It was generally believed however that no grand jury would be called un til such tune as a thorough invest s tion should be made which would serve to array evidence, should there be any that would ass st the grand jury it be ng claimed that no grand jury would be able to go into the- books of the , statehouse and make or guial inquiry into condit ons there County Attorney G vens and A-ttor ney General Peterson have called at teution to these rumors and suspicions i I and County Attorney Givens notified I the court in his petit on that aince Al I- len s plea of guilty the county attor ney ha3 obtained evidence of a criminal ! nature warranting presentation to a grand jury 1 3 Reports to Governor j A week ago Asel Eamstedt .member j of the state tax comm ss on who was 11 1 appointed by Governor Haines to take j charge of Allen s otf ce when Allen I was arrested and who was nstructed to make a thorough investigat on of 1 thai; off ce made a formal written re port to Governor Haines It was sa d 1 this report would be made public m I mediately but during the week t has become known that powerful influence i has been brought to bear on the gov ernor to suppress the report and it is stated the governor at one time an i nounced that he would not "make it 1 public under any circumstances , I It is not known, of course what the report conta ned but it is sa d that t contains a list of the I O Us and other personal papers carried by O V Allen in the cash drawer of the of fice of state treasurer and it is said that a port on of the pressure upon . Governor Haines to suppress the re t port came from a part of those named ' ' in that list Attorney General Peterson in his I communicat on to County Attorney Givena has called attention to suspi ' I c ons cast upon persons other than I Allen and declares that such persons have a right to have the r names i cleared if they are innocent while the gu Ity ought to ba pun shed County Attorney Givens has informed the court that he has secured inf ormat on tend ing to establ sh violat on jf cr minal lj laws wh ch should be investigated by a i grand jury |
