Show 1 SHOT; 1 DEAD, mm Breaking of Improvised Ladder Lad-der Frustrates Plan for Wholesale Escape of Idaho Prisoners. PRISON OFFICIALS ARE COMPLIMENTED After Complete Investigation Guards Are Exonerated ; Men Shoot to Kill When Convicts Rush Wall. Special to Tha Tribune. BOISE, Ida., May 23. The breaking of an improvised ladder made of prison cots prevented an intended wholesale delivery of "convicts at the Idaho state penitentiary here at noon today. As a result of the attempt U. G. Bearup, serving a life sentence ' for murder, from Bannock county, is dead, having been shot in the groin, dying from the wound a 3:05 o'clock this afternoon. C. A.' Allers, uuder sentence for forgery, from Shoshone county, has his left arm so badly shattered that amputation am-putation may be necessary. Lyman Jones, serving from ten to forty years for second-degree murder, was reported shot in the leg, but it was found that he had simply dropped to the ground when the shooting began. K. R. Boward, serving from one to fourteen years for embezzlement, attempted at-tempted to join in the escape, but was una"ble to scale the wall. Guard Ray Peterson, a brother of Attorney At-torney General Peterson, is responsible for preventing two of the prisoners from making their getaway. He shot Bereup. Guards Commended. The state board of prison commissioners commis-sioners made a complete investigation of the attempted delivery this afternoon after-noon and exonerated all of the prison officials of any blamo and highly com-mendod com-mendod them for their promptness. While one of the tower guards was at lunch some thirty or forty of the prisoners were near the south and west walls of the penitentiary cleaning their cots and bed springs.. "Unnoticed they nailed two of the cots together and rushed to the south wall, pushing this improvised ladder against it, having timed the absence of the guard. Up this ladder they scrambled. Guard Howell, .in one of the other towers, quickly covered the prisoners and ordered them to "halt." The men continued to scale the wall until Jones . had reached the top. Howell raised his rifle to shoot,, but the cartridge I missed Are. He quickly threw open the chamber, but hy this time Jones was over the wall. Ladder Is Broken. The other prisoners, crowding behind, proved too great a weight for the cots and the ladder broke, precipitating the men to the ground on tne inside of the prison wall. Howell then opened Are on Jones, hitting him. In the meantime the west wall was rushed by another crowd of prisoners, led by Bearup and Allers. They used a barrel and cots to scale the wall, the two leaders getting over. Guard Blausser opened fire on them from his tower. . , , . Warden Snook, hearing the shooting, rushed from .his residence aud started firing at the two fleeing men. Guard Peterson joined the warden and gave chase on foot. Aj father living in Michigan survives him. Bearup shot and killed Deputy Sheriff McFadden at Grace, in Bannock county, when the deputy sheriff sought to arrest ar-rest him on a charge of bootlegging, which had been carried on among men engaged in working on an electric power plant. The deputy was seated in a buggy when Bearup suddenly pulled a revolver and shot him, Bearup then made his escape, being aided, it was believed, by friends. He iirst went into Wyoming and then doubled back to C'obre. Xew, from which place be wrote to the Largil-liere Largil-liere bank at Soda Springs for funds deposited there by him. He asked that the money be sent to him at C'obre on a certain date. Instead of the money being sent Idaho officers were on' hand and seized him as he called for his mail. He was a young man, not more than 27 years old, when he was committed, but the officers have ascertained that he had a long series of crimes charged against i him. I |
