Show PBOSLEM PRESENTED 81 THEJMMPLOYED City Officials of Ogden Are Facing a Most Difficult Situation. to The Tribune. OGPEX, Feb. 5. In view of the increasing in-creasing number of unemployed men who are being lodged at tbe city jail r.'gtly, the city officials are considering consider-ing some action that will improve con- I cation?. Tbe officials do not feel that ! he men should bp refused a place to f sleep, but tbe constant increase in the cumber seeking accommodation makes . it necessary to' act in tbe matter. j Last night 176" unemployed men slept n the jaii; at least they were allowed behind 'the doors, but "whether they found a place to sleep is not known, frjth men stretched out in corridors, tells and on top of the main tank, it j k. probable that the late comers found i nothing more than space iu which to ! stand up. Tbe number has increased to Jufh an extent that the officers find I difficulty in finding places for their prisoners. Some of the number who sleep at the jail are regular patrons, according to City Jailer Hagbart Anderson. They return uigbt after night seemingly with the understanding that the lodging accommodations ac-commodations will be permanently supplied sup-plied throughout the winter. Until a! few weeks ago there was a limit of j five nights tor any one man and it i mav be found necessary to enforce this I rule again, according "to the officials, j The lodging accommodations fur-1 nished at the jail is believed by some j of the officers to explain the small amonnt of crime in the city for the i reason that the unemployed men, most of whom are honest, will not steal if ' furnished a place to spend the night. 1 I This opinion will be taken into consid-j consid-j cration by the officials in seeking a j j remedy for the present conditions. |
