Show MEDIATORS DISGUSTED. The administration finds it quite a task to make the mediators think well of t'arranza and Villa. Evidently the mediators do not possess the forgiving spirit of President Wilson. They have been enraged by the trickery of the constitutionalist leaders and are not inclined to grant them any recognition in the peace conference. The ad-'' ad-'' ministration at Washington, however, feels that no permanent good can be accomplished by merely adjusting the differences between the United States !( and the Huerta faction. .Soon Huerta ami bis faction will disappear if the rebel successes continue. Soon the onlv considerable faction to deal with will be the C'arranza-Villa faction. However distasteful negotiations may be with the arrogant and unreasonable rebel leaders, President Wilson 13 of ! the opinion that any peace agreement j must take into consideration the chief I political power in Mexico. Whether I the Carranza-ViHa. faction can justly : j olaim that power at the present time ' is open to doubl. but all signs point to the fact that the revolutionists soon will be the government in !Iexico. i TLepresident probably has id mind another consideration when he insists upon dealing with tho revolutionists. If he should exclude them from the negotiations ne-gotiations they would be able, to raise a great hue and cry in future that the failure of the peace conference was wholly due to the fact that they were not permitted to participate in it. The president desires to give every element a chance to bring about permanent peace. If the conference fails then all the factions in '.Mexico must share the blame. The A. B. C. mediators, meantime, are gaining valuable information. They are learning something of the sincerity of Americans and much of the insincerity insin-cerity of the Mexicans. They are beginning be-ginning to understand the dillicult position po-sition in which the United States has been placed for about four years. They can now appreciate the disgust as well as the embarrassment of two American presidents who have used every honest effort to get along with intra.etahle neighbors. All of which will make for a. better understanding between North and South America. |
