Show Report Verified. SAN FRANCISCO, June 1. Official verification of the report of a volcanic eruption on Mount Lassen, in northern California, was received here today at headquarters of the United States forest service, in a telegram from W. J. Rushing, Rush-ing, forest supervisor of the district in which Mount Lassen is located. His telegram tele-gram follows: "Mineral, Cal., June 1. 1911. Volcanic eruption on Mount Lassen occurred 5 p. m. May 30. Crater 25 by 40 feet, with lateral fissures, was found. Mud, boulders boul-ders and sand lie one to two feet deep over an area 200 feet In diameter. Ranger Abbery examined the rupture yesterday. "Heavy volume of steam is still rising. The crater is one-fourth mile from the forest fire lookout house, near the old crater. No damage has been done yet." Supervisor Rushing reported a forest fire In the neighborhood, but it was said here that it had not been caused by the volcanic disturbance. |
