At last the schedule has been completed, Shaw and MacKean running a dead beat with 23 polDts each. On Friday, tho 24th ultimo, the Jubilant MacKean sailed Into tho, taciturn Teteran. Shaw, always dangerous whoa backed Into a comer, and Instead of emerging with tho draw which would have given him first place, MacKean sllppod nicely Into a known loss. Shaw pressed homo his ndYantaga and finally won tho game by exact play. Tlion off-hand tbey began playing another sorios of four games to decide tho tie, the first game, a "Kelso." finally running into tbts position: posi-tion: Black 11, 12: king. 10. Whlto 20, 24: king, IS: black (Shaw) to tovo and win by 10-15. followed ' by 12-18. Unfortunately, however, how-ever, he first moved 12-13. allowing MacKfan to flxenango by 21-19, 16-26, 18-2.. drawn. There the matter rests, MacKean declining to pay further and offering to split tho first and socond prizes with Shaw. His contention Is that the state championship cham-pionship was not at ttako In this tourney, the U. C. C. A. having failed formally to accept his offer to resign tho stato championship prior to his visit to Scotland In 1311. and properly amend their constitution (as did the national orgitniratton when Banks llkewlso resigned In 1312) by Inserting Insert-ing a new clause to the effect that the winner of the annual etatn tourney would bo recognised ait the stato champion. Also, that the posted rules governing this tourney did not mention tho slato championship In any way, but strictly provided pro-vided that play should follow a certain schedule and that a given series must bo completed prior io a set date (In this Instance. April 25). Mr. Shaw appears perfectly willing to contlnun pl.ty, aa uuanlmously onioned by the playing committee, com-mittee, but Mr. MacKean holds that the committee commit-tee exceeded their powers, that they can not order play after the schedule expired and can only order a division of thn first and second prlxcs between Mr. Shaw nnd himself. The fight between Burton and Kcyworth for fourth place again upset the "dopo," as Ilurton had won and drawn the first two games, hut Key-worth Key-worth gamely fought thn last two games to a draw and a win, and splitting tho series. The twenty-game match bctwoon theso players, beginning be-ginning May 4. should prove Interesting, as Key-worth Key-worth especially has the knack of getting away from all dopo and they both got al It hammer and tongs to wit).
