The "hull moose" parly in Utah is apparently entering upon, or already has entered upon, an uncharted sea of trouble and expectancy. In fuct, to use a common phraso, the "bull moose ' part- is away up in the air. And, to get at the gist of tho matter, Col. 0. E. Loose of Provo, former chairman chair-man of tho state Iiepublicnn committee, commit-tee, and .Republican national committeeman, commit-teeman, is the cause of tho presont un-resl. un-resl. Colonel Loose, it will bo readily ro-membcred, ro-membcred, is a Roosevelt adhoront, first, last and all tho time. The colonel went to the Chicago convention, instructed in-structed for Taft, but voted with tho Roosevelt crowd on practically everything every-thing except the nomni.ltion.' Later, the colonel, as the representative ot Utah, signed tho call for a national convention of the "bull moose" party. Future in Doubt. Since tho issuance of the call, various vari-ous states have taken, up tho matter of calling state conventions, for the purpose pur-pose of electing delegates to tho national nation-al "bull moose' ' convention at Chicago Chi-cago next month, and it was naturally presumed that Colonel Looso would be found in tho front rnnk of the party in this stato. This presumption, however, say members of tho party, who havo been leaders in the movement, along with Colonel Loose, appears to bo uii; founded. On the contran-, members of the party sixy Colonel Looso appears to bo suffering from an aggravated case of cold feet, or some other malady equally serious, so far as tho future of tho party in this state is concerned. Stays in Brush. While the members of tho third term party in this city aro falling over themselves them-selves in an effort to start something, Colonel Looso is spending his time in Spring Dell, a Provo canyon resort, and apparently is taking no interest whatever what-ever in the campaign, if Biich it may bo called. ' ' Not Candidate for Anything. When asked if he would sign a state convention call for the "bull moose" Earty in Utah, the colonel Teplied that e aid not know whether he would or not. Ho also was nskod if ho would accept a nomination for governor on the ticket, and his reply waB: "I would not run for anything whatever what-ever on any ticket on earth." Colonel Looso 's attitude is said to be a gTeat disappointment to members of the Roosevelt club, some of whom point out that he is a business associate asso-ciate and close personal friend of Senator Sen-ator Beod Smoot, chief engineer of the Republican machine Mn "Utah, and" thoy aro wondering if his fealty to Smoot outweighs what he considors his duty to Roosevelt. In tho meantime a definite announcement announce-ment from Colonel Looso is anxiously awaited. |
