Show THE TEACHERS' CONVENTION. It is indeed gratifying to Salt Lake City to have the teachers in thoir National Na-tional Educational Convention decide upon Salt Lake as their meeting place noxt yenr. There seems to havo been a consensus consen-sus of opinion that Salt Lake wa5 entitled en-titled to this convention. Perhaps this concession aroso by reason of tho J act that Salt Lake ought to havo hud tho convention some flvo or six years ago, when this city was made a choice. The officers of the Association came to this city, investigated matters here and concluded that it was best not to have the convention here that year. We have always considered that the officers did Salt Lake City an injustice in taking away tho convoution from Salt Lake at that time; but now that injustice is mado up by the unanimous agreement to hold the great convention conven-tion hero next summer. Needless to say, Salt Lake City will extend a hospitable greeting to the teachers. Al doors will be gladly thrown open to welcomo tho visitors, and everything will be put at tneir disposal. The city will be theirs while they are here, anu it is to bo hoped that a hotter spirit of harmony will prevail in the convention next year than was exhibited in the one just closed. Indeed a separation of the convention into two parts, an as sociation of Eastorn teachers and an association of Western teachers, was actually threatened in tho convention this year. It is fortuuatc for us, however, how-ever, that if any such change as this is impending, which we should all be extremely sorry to see, that the separation sep-aration is postponed at least until after af-ter the convention to be held in Salt .Lake in JU.ld. While on this point wo wish to insist in-sist strongly that tho teachers would make a very groat mistake -if they divide their association at all, for it" they divide, there may be no end of division. There will be not only an Eastern association and a Western .association, .as-sociation, but a Southern association, a Middle States association and a New England association. Better stick together to-gether while you are together, ladies and gentlemen, and whatever fights you may havo among yourselves, light' it out like men and women, and shake hands afterwards; but stick together. All that, however, is aside from the question of having the convention in Salt Lake next year. We are all glad that the teachers arc coming to, us next summer, and will endeayor io make it so pleasant for them that they" will havo a kindly remembrance of Salt Lake while they live, and will make Salt Lake one of their regular meeting places -to be considered as ire-quently ire-quently as possible in the appointment of their convention places 3'ear . by year. |
