L Clark, xrho claims to havo come from Park, HI., made a savage attack upon Mrs. Georee Bybee at her homo near Elva, eight miles north of hero, yesterday yes-terday afternoon, beating tho woman frightfully with a piece of gas pipe. Ho beat her three-year-old boy into insensibility mid almost choked to death her twcnty-months-old daughter. Clark evidently tried to kill all three. Passersby were attracted by tho screams of the woman and gave the alarm. Clark hearing people approaching, ran nnd hid in a nearby hay field, anrl when found by his pursuers drew a razor from his nockct and made two deep slashes in his throat. Ho would no doubt havo been lynched by the angry an-gry crowd had he not made the assault as-sault on himself. Sheriff Bucklin was telephoned for and in company with Coroner Morley made a quick run from hero to Elva in an automobile, bringing the man here, where he was locked in tho general hospital and his wounds dressed. The man is under guard in tho hospital, with a fair chance for recovery. Mrs. Bybee is a young woman, wifo or tho grandson of County Commissioner Commis-sioner B. L. Bybee. ono of tho best known nnd thoroughly respected men J in tho county. With her children sho was in a sheep camp in the yard of their home, which is on tho outskirts of Elva. Clark, in passing through tho streets of the town, picked up tlio pioce of gas pipe, nc tried to gain admittanco to another placo. but was refused, when ho wont on to tho Bybeo place. Mrs. Bvbeo is in a critical condition and tho lives of tho children aro uc-spairod uc-spairod of. Tho husband of the woman, who is employed nt the mill in Elva, was sent for and had to bo restrained from shootintr the wounded man. The people peo-ple of Elva aro very much wrought up over tho matter and no doubt would havo lynched Clark hnd he not so se-veroly se-veroly wounded himself. Clark is a stranger in the vicinity, having worked in tho hay fields near Elva during tho past few days. A memorandum book in his pocket boars the name and his address as Park, Til., and his age as 35 years. Ho has evidently evi-dently been in Boise lately, as a pawn ticket from a Boise firm was found in his clothos. Clark, after tho operation, was too weak to talk, but made tho statement that ho was drunk at tho time. |
