Show NOVA SCOTIA VILLAGE WIPED OUT BY FIRE HALIFAX. X. S'., July 12. As a result re-sult of a forest fire the village of Point Tupper, a settlement near the entrance to Port Ilawkesbnry, is in ashes today, practically wiped out by tho flames. Tho town of Port Hnwkcs-Ibury Hnwkcs-Ibury itself was seriously threatened, but was saved when the wind died down. The heaviest single loss at Point Tupper was sustained by the Intercolonial Inter-colonial railway, whose freight sheds, coal shedn and transfer piers, together with many loaded freight cars were destroyed. The Embre and Dudley hotels and several frume dwellings were burned. On the south shore, about thirty miles from Halifax, forest fires were so threatening last night that 300 soldiers sol-diers were ordered to proceed to tho scene from the garrison here, but just as the troops were about to leave a heavy downpour of rain saved the situation. |
