After a witness had testified today before the house Judiciary subcommittee that United States District Judge Cornelius H. Han-ford Han-ford was an "Intense patriot," the committee com-mittee placed In the record a copy of a letter written by Judge Hanford on October 20, 1S9G, to an attorney of Mount Vernon, Wash., who had recommended that the judge appoint a certain man to office. The letter says In part: "Your letter of October 19, together with a petition for the- appointment of Ir. Weppler to be United States court commissioner at McMurray, haH been referred re-ferred to me. "I do not usually inquire about the politics pol-itics of persons recommended for appointment appoint-ment as commissioners, but loyalty and a belief that the national government may rightfully exercise Its lawful authority in all places arc qualifications for the offices of-fices and when tho time comos for making mak-ing an appointment I "will not regard Mr. Weppler na a suitable person unless 3 am assured that ho Is not a supporter of the Chicago platform or of tho candidates candi-dates for offico who subscribe to Its declarations. dec-larations. "I say this because I am not personally acquainted with Mr. Weppler and do not know his position in this campaign. (Signed) "C. H. Other witnesses testified today as to th drinking habits of Judge Hanford. One witness told that he had won a wager that in anv one of nine saloons the bartenders, bar-tenders, if" asked for "a Judge Hanford Martini" would substitute an onion for the customary ollvo . ... The witness said that he had been threatened with business ostracism because be-cause of his testimony. Other witnesses tf stifled that while Judge Hanford was accustomed to drinking intoxicating beverages, bev-erages, "he was always temperate. |
