Crane of Chicago, who oon-s oon-s iributed heavily to Senator Ijh. Folletto 's campaign fund, and Charles Van Hise, president of the University Uni-versity of Wisconsin, Senator La Toilette's Toi-lette's ardent supporter prior to the Chicago convention, will take luncheon tomorrow with Governor Woodrow Wilson, Wil-son, a short time before the expected arrival of Speaker Champ Clark. I News of their comintr was made public pub-lic by Governor Wilson tonight. Close friends of the governor said during the afternoon that Mr. Crane had transferred his preference from the Wisconsin senator to Governor Wilson and would be willing to do all ho could to bring about thf success of the Democratic Dem-ocratic ticket. Hopes Are Raised. The telegram announcing Mr. Crane's acceptance of the governor's invitation to luncheon followed on the heels of this statement. As one of the original contributors and the donor of the largest sum to the La Folletto campaign cam-paign fund, Mr. Crane helped make possiblo the senator's fight for the lie-publican lie-publican nomination. His indicated espousal es-pousal of Governor Wilson's cause is hailed as an index to the sontiment among the La Folletto followers. President Van Hisc has been for years a warm supporter of Sonator La Fol-lette. Fol-lette. It is not unlikely that Messrs. Crane and Van Hise will meet Speaker Clark hero tomorrow afternoon. Mr. Clark, the governor said, might discuss legislation now bet'oro the house ho did not know, ff Mr. Clark brought tho topic up of his own initiative in-itiative it would be discussed, he said. Governor Wilson conferred late into the afternoon with Robert S. Hudspeth, Huds-peth, William F. McCombs, Josophus Daniels, North Carolina's national committeeman com-mitteeman and E. E. Grosscup, Democratic Demo-cratic state chairman of New Jersey, upon the message which he will send to the national committee, at Chicago Monda-. May Modify Message. When the conference ended Governor Gover-nor Wilson said there had not been time to consider all the noints and that. I tho message might be modified at a meeting tomorrow. One of the national committeemen, who enjoys the governor's closo friendship, friend-ship, was of tho opinion tonight that the governor would Tecommcnd Mr. McCombs Mc-Combs as national chairman and advise against the division of authoritv in directing1 di-recting1 tho campaign between "the ua-fional. ua-fional. committee and the campaign committee. Even, at this late hour, ho said, the governor had not- -made a possiblo choico for treasurer of the committee or for chairman of the finance committee. commit-tee. The tentative plan to have the party's national headquarters in Chicago Chi-cago may be changed if a suggestion made by Mr. McCombs this afternoon is followed. "I think New York would be a good placo for the headquarters," he said. "Of course, we should want to have an office at Chicago and another in the west." Pettigrew Not Missed. Josophus Daniels had a long talk with the governor, at tho conclusion of which he issued a statement, saying: "There is not a bolter inside the ranks in an3' state in the nation. Em- Iphasis was given this situation today with the announcement in the morning papers to the effect that former Senator Sena-tor Pettigrew of South Dakota had journeyed to Oyster Bay and pledged allegiance to tho "bull moose." Senator Pettigrew, who is best, known a8 a Populist and Republican, and who is everything but a Democrat, made a vain effort to break into the Baltimore Balti-more convention. The national Democracy De-mocracy refused to have any part of him, and after being denied n seat as delegate, he has cast his lot with the "bull moose." The Democracy ia to bo congratulated. Never has the partv been so united, and the ex-Populist from South Dakota has rendered it a real service by giving emphasis to tho fact that there is not a bolting member mem-ber between the two oceans." |
