Show JUDGE L. G, GDli TALKS OFTHE HOME Head of Industrial School Gives Warning to Fathers and Mothers. DISCUSSES THE FUTURE Says That Sacredness of Parenthood Par-enthood Is Too Often Not Realized. Judge R. O. Gowans, who formerly pro-sided pro-sided In tho Salt Lako Juvonllo court, and who is now superintendent of the state industrial school at Ogdcn, wars the speaker at yesterday afternoon's tabernacle taber-nacle service, which was a part of the quarterly conforenco iiroceedlngs of tho Ensign stake, with Major Richard W. Young presiding. Franklin S. Richards uttered the Invocation Invo-cation and Wlllard young pronounced the' benediction. The musical exercises consisted con-sisted of a hymn, the anthem, "Jerusalem, "Jerusa-lem, My Glorious Home," and "Palm Branches." Tho first meeting or the conference was held In the morning at the Twenty-first ward chapel, when reports re-ports of stake officials, priesthood quorums quo-rums and auxiliary organizations were presented and other routine business was transacted. Judge Gowans contrmded that there was a practical and common-sonso side to tho work of redeeming tho human family. The Ideals of maturo manhood and womanhood do not abHOlva men from responsibility for faithful performance perform-ance of certain Important duties of the work in behalf of mankind. Whatever Is done in tho way of redemption and salvation sal-vation will be accomplished .under natural law. The work of redemption Is a slow and gradual process and progress, including in-cluding salvation from moral evil and physical disease. , How Value Is Measured. It Is believed by men. for instance, that tuberculosis and typhoid fever aro largely preventable diseases, and possession posses-sion of such belief Imposes upon men the duty to undertake every known method of minimizing theso afflictions. A similar simi-lar situation exists in so far as moral development de-velopment Is concerned. The value of a man to humanity is measured by the extent of tho clrclo In which is included the volumo of his consideration, con-sideration, for the welfaro of others. Lowest in the scalo Is tho man who lias absolutely no thought for the well being of his associates; who cares for no other being, but who. on the contrary, will take from othors without compunction In order to selfishly work in his own behalf exclusively: who will even take human life in order that his own shall be proserved to him. A most potent example ex-ample of this lowest order has boon had within the past few weeks la the individual indi-vidual lawlessness displayed by a creature crea-ture in one of the mining camps. From this lowest type tho grades progress upward up-ward to the perfect typo represented In Christ. From tho speaker's viewpoint, a poo-pic's poo-pic's position In tho scale of humanity could bo. best estimated by their concern over the welfare of children and the Improvement Im-provement of future generations. The highest type of civilization Is seen In the community which seeks first assurance of superiority in the next generation, that from one to the other there shall bo continuous progress. Looking to the Future. The sacredness and responsibility of fatherhood and motherhood can. not be loo often or lo forcefully Impressed upon the human mind. It Is estimated that In the year MM npproxlmatelv 1,000,000 children will be born In the United States. It Is a sad reflection upon existing conditions con-ditions to learn that about 250,000 of these will probably die before reaching tho age of twelve months, the speaker added. In view of this awful condition, Dr. Gowans declared, there should be an awakening. Many fathers and mothers moth-ers arc not properly fitted for the responsibilities re-sponsibilities of fatherhood and motherhood, mother-hood, and the large percentage of deaths among Infants Is brought about through Ignorance and lack of attention to preventable pre-ventable diseases. , In any other activity of life no man is accepted as being qualified except after faithful preparation. Yet in the most Important sphere of life In the matter of fatherhood and motherhood the race is being injured through ignorance igno-rance begotten of non-preparation for parenthood. The new education goes further than the mere training of people to think. It reaches beyond mental development alone, by Including physical training. It teaches children to think and to do and to be, and this system will bring to the race through future generations a superiority impossible under a system of mental development, de-velopment, alone. Love for Children. Love for children is greater than the love of man for woman and the love of woman for man. This principle, associated asso-ciated with proper concern for their phvs-ical, phvs-ical, moral and mental welfare, and the adoption of the single standard of morality mor-ality for men and women. Is going to prove to be the solvation of the raco In superiority of Its futuro generations. The home was never in greater danger than it is today. The people have turned over children's amusement to the American Ameri-can business man, who is exploiting for profit only tho right of children to have recreation. Tho moving picture show Is tho greatest menace to children, said the speaker, who described tho case of a young culprit once brought before him on a charge of burglary, who declared that his first Inclination toward crime was tho result of seeing burglaries portrayed por-trayed in moving picture shows. It Is not fair to children for parents to permit per-mit them to go to these exhibitions unless they know that tho pictures arc absolutely abso-lutely mora) and non-contamlnativc to the forming mind. Tho speaker also gave attention to public- danct! hall.s, whose existence, lie a id. was a menace to young persons of I ooth sexes. I |
