Show ARMSTRONG CHOSEN YALE ROWING COACH Selection Looked Upon as a Signal for Abandonment of English Stroke. NEW HAVEN. Conn., Dec. 14. Captain Cap-tain T. B, Dcncgre of tho Yale crew announced an-nounced tonight that Richard Armstrong, Yalo '95, has been appolntod. head coach of the Vale crows. Guy Nlchells of England, Eng-land, coach of the Lcandcr crow, and Coach Giannlnl of the New York Ath-lotlc Ath-lotlc culb, have been asked to assist Armstrong, Arm-strong, and it is probable that they will accopt. All three were here this afternoon after-noon and mot the Yalo rowing squad. Although Yale rowing officials would not talk for publication tonight. It was genorally agreed that tho appolntmont of Mr. Armstrong as head coach means tho retention of the Yalo graduato system sys-tem of coaching. Armstrong rowed on the victorious freshmen crew In 1S93 and on the winning win-ning varsity crews in 1S91 and 1S95. being be-ing captain the latter year. It Is bc-llovcd bc-llovcd Armstrong will abandon tho so-called so-called English stroke and reintroduce the "Cook stroke," or a variation of It. Last year tho Yale crews were coached by ITarcourt Gold and G. W. KIrby, prominent Englluh oarsmen, and British methods were adopted. Yale's defeat by Harvard was decisive, and undergraduates undergradu-ates and graduates denounced the English Eng-lish stroke.
