In order that all iu Salt L-nko who love the sacred masterpieces of music mu-sic may have the opportunity of hearing "Tho Messiah," Squire Coop announces a secoud production of tho oratorio, ro be given at tho Empress theater Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at popular prices. An artistic triumph that was- appreciated appre-ciated by an audience that sat almost enthralled was the production of Handel's Han-del's oratorio. -'The Messiah," at the Salt Lake theater last night by tho University Uni-versity of Utah Music society, tho Salt Lake Philharmonic, orchestra and four soloists, who though local artists arc of moro than local fame. The production was dircclod by Squire Coop, who foi seven years has conducted the music work in the university. Alfred Best, who sang the tenor parts, was in splendid voice, his rendition rendi-tion of "Comfort Ye," and also of "Behold and Sec" being particularly smooth and strong. Professor A. C Lund, who sang tho bass, showed splendid comprehension of Its beauties as woll as its difficulties Excellent all through, his best work was In the air. "Why Do tho Nations So Furiously Rage?" Miss Edna Cohn's beautiful contralto was exquisitely and Intelligently handled. Tn the well-known and loved. "He shall feed his flock like a Hhepherd," tho tondemoss of her expression movod many to tears. Mrs. Browning Scores. Mrs. Maggie Tout Browning, who sang tho soprano, was as ever tho true artist. ar-tist. Her Interpretation of "Come Unlo Him" was beautiful In tho extreme, and sho rose to sublime heights In the final air. "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth." The great Hallelujah chorus was so splendidly given that the audience Insisted In-sisted upon Its repetition. While the unusually un-usually difficult Amen chorus. the finale, given for the first tlm in Salt Lake, was handled without fault lo disturb dis-turb even the trained car. Squire Coop received many congratulations congratula-tions over the artistic success, of tho production and It Is certain that tho Sunday Sun-day production will have a capacity house. |
