Show Clubs That Retain Managers ff Have Better of the Argument iDoea It pay for ball clubs to change managers every season That's a question ques-tion that has been runnlnjf looso for a long time. Some argue that It does arid others that It doesn't. All of which comes as tho case may be. There la one thing certain, though, and that Is: The clubs that keep the same leader year In and year out generally are up In tho running, while those that cliango each season generally arc- down In tho rut. For example. Jake tho Cardinals and Browns since tho season of 1911. Roger Brcsnahan did well In 1911, fell down In 1912 and was let out. Miller Huggins took up tho Job, but did little. Jlo'll get another chanpo In 1914. With the Browns It's rho samo. Bobby Bob-by Wallace irlcd In 1911 und 1312, but fell down. George Stovall was at tho helm in 1913, until ho was deposed In favor of Jimmy Austin, and tho lattei In favor of Branch Rickey. He will try his hand next year. But, on the other hand. Lake a look at the manager role of tho clubs that aro up In the running year after year. Do thoy chango leaders often? They Connie Mack has been the manager for tho Athlollcs or a good many yeans and he again will take chargo of tho club In 1914. Tho Giants, contenders every season, have had McGraw as chaperon for a long tlmo. And there's no niovo afoot to oust the hustling Mo-Graw Mo-Graw from his berth. As long as he does wall ho will be kept. One or two clubs which chango managers man-agers quite frequently prospered In 1913. Tho Naps and Braves are the most notable Instances. Charloy Somers has had a lot of tough luok with managers since 1011. Nap Lajolo started the 1911 Bcason as leader, but quit and Stovall was Installed. In-stalled. George did well, but the club already al-ready had made arrangements with Harry Davis, bo Stovall had to get out. Davis started the 1012 campaign, but did little, and resigned. Joe Birmingham Birming-ham took his place, and was manager In 1913, and finished third with his team. IIo will lead the club again in 1914. After Tcnncy failed In 1911 with tho Boston Braves, and Kllng In 1912, George Stalllngs took hold and his club was tho sensation In 1913, finishing fifth. Nothing better than last could be seen for tho club when the season began. Tho Yankees and Reds are other clubs that have changed managers very often but novor got anywhere. So It looks very much as If tho clubs that employ the services of the samo manager year In and year out are tho ones that pros-par pros-par the most, Tho managers employed by tho clubs slnco 1911, and who will lead the teams In 1914, arc: ' l AMniUCAN LEAGUE.
