The secretary of tho Portland Chamber of Commerce j has Just written a letter to ilayor Mitchell Mitch-ell of Eureka, urging the support of a bill I which was recently Introduced In the I United States senate authorizing the employment em-ployment of additional architects In order or-der that public buildings, for which money has already been appropriated, can be erected without so much unnecessary delay. Tho letter goes on to stato that Eureka, has received an appropriation of $50,000 for tho erection of a postofflce building; that It will be from three to live years before plans can be prepared la the architect's offlco at Washington under present conditions and that thero arc 734 authorized buildings at present In tho architect's office. All arc subject to tho same delay for th'o reason that in this office thero are virtually the same number num-ber of clerks that there were twenty years ago, with the samo wage rate, and no authority au-thority to Increase cither, except by act of congress. Mayor Mitchell has written to the Utah delegation at Washington asking that they support the bill which is now before the United States senate. |
