DYNAMITE FOUND H AT YORK TUNNEL Mexican May Have Planned to Blow Up Bulkhead; Possibilities of Lopez Being in the Mine Are Discussed by Deputies and Wager Is Made That Search in Mine Will End Sue- cessfully. i By Staff Correspondent. BINGHAM, Doc. 6.--A cave-in 600 feet hack from tho portal of the Par ncll tunnel was the only clow to the possible whereabouts of Raphael Lo pc. found by tho searching parties when they abandoned work last night. By some it is thought his body mav be under tho pile of dirt and oro. The search will bo taken up again this morning, tho unexplored parts of the workings thoroughly inspected and the causes of the cave-in investigated. Late yostorday afternoon the search-ing search-ing crew .under Foreman Hosking of the Apex mine went up the Andy in cliuo, whore tho shooting of Hulsey and Mandorich occurrod. When they reached tho top, with the intention of continuing on through tho Parnell tun uel, tHe ten men found they were blocked by a fresh cave-in which shut off. tho Parnell tunnel from the re mainder of tho mine. It is bolieved that Lopoz, dead or alive, may be be-twecn be-twecn tho portal and tho cave-in, and this possibility will be investigated this morning. Cave-in Possibly Natural. According to Superintendent T. S. Rood of tho Apex, tho cave-in might oasilj' bo cither tho work of LopAz or a natural cavo-in, as he sayB the tim- bors had been weakening at that point for some time. Tho cavo-ln is fresh, howovor, in either ovent. Mike Stefa-no, Stefa-no, tho Italian, said last night that he had takon the blankets and sup-plies sup-plies to Lopez in tho Parnell and this strengthens tho belief that the Moxi-can Moxi-can may havo mndo this tunnel the base of his operations, and, when he found the deadly fumes creeping up on him, retreated to it, and by moans of a steel bar, pried off some of the roof nnd allowed tho gravel to fall in and block up the tunnel. It is also considered possible that Lopez may, J havo been buried alive undor the cave-iu cave-iu while attempting to effect it. It is also considered possible that ho may havo iutentionully buried himself alive under it in order to hide bis fate for-over for-over from his pursuers, if possible. The bulkhead at tho portal of the Parnell tvas immediately closed again and the guard doublod during the night. Smudging of this tunnel may be resorted to ngain today. The fumes which issued from the portal yestorday morning when the bulkhead was oponod vero not as heavy as was ex- H peeled, and this leads the searchers to beliovo that Lopez may possibly bav cut off the fumes soon enough to have 1 provonted their being fatnl to him. The latest investigations give rise to four possibilit-ice. Ono is that the cave-in might bo a natural ono, accord ing to Superintendent V. S. Hood, who said he hud noticed somo time 3go ( that the roof timbers wore weak at (Continued on Pago Twa CHiYHIE BURIED LOPEZ ill (Continued from Pago One.) that point. If such is tho caso and Lopez -has nothing to do with it he may still bo in another and unexplored part of the mine, or he may havo escaped es-caped 6inco tho shooting a week ago by some means unknown to tho searchers. search-ers. Tho second possibility is that tho cavo-in was not entirely effectual and Lopez may have suffocated before he completed his work. The third is tho possibility that ho realized tho futility of his attempts to escape the ends of justico and, not unliko Samson, toppled top-pled a part of his tomb upon himself in a labt attempt to foil his pursuora in their search for his body. Tho fourth possibility is that whilo Lopez might have been attomptinp to shut himself off from tho smoke by tho cavo-in, cavo-in, ho was caught beneath it and accidentally acci-dentally killed. In any event, tho secret se-cret will probably be rovoaled today when a further investigation will be mode. It was at tho bulkhead of the Par-nell Par-nell tunnel that tho guards Sunday afternoon af-ternoon claimed to Lave hoard Lopoz digging. Mike Stefano, tho Italian, admitted yesterday that it was into tho Parnell tunnel that ho had taken tho blankets and other supplies for Lopoz. Tho Boarohera aro inclined to behovo that tho bandit made this tunnel his base of supplies and when he saw tho smoko crowding in on him rushed to it and caved in tho back passage so as to prevent the smoko from aoinc through. b May "Be Alive, It is believed ho may still bo alive in there, although considerable smoko came out tho portal before the bulkhead bulk-head was sealed with earth. It was noticed, no-ticed, however, that when tho Parnell bulkhead was opened yesterday morning morn-ing that tho fumes wero not noarly as heavy as was expected. This is now accounted for on tho supposition that Lopez discovered his predicament early in tho smudging oporations and caved in the back of tho tunnel immediatoly. Whether he did it in timo to save himself him-self from asphyxiation is not known. When tho York tunnol was opened yesterday aftornoon thirteen Bticlis of dynamite, two coils of fuse and several sev-eral caps wero found, indicating that possibly Lopez hnd planned to blow his way to liborty as was expocfed bv some, but was caught by tho fumes before be-fore ho could complete his plans. In that caso he would probably havo fled to a lower levol because tho smoko would nnturallv rush toward tho top whore tho York is located. Guards Stationed. As fast as the various parts of tho miuo were searched yesterday, guards wero stationed so as to nrovnnt i,nn from getting back into them. This systom will bo- used until the entire underground system of tunnols, etopes inclines raises and tho liko have been thoroughly inspected. Residents of Biugham yesterday offered of-fered a bet of $1010 against $3030 that Lopez would bo found in the mine Thoy hoard that 3 to 1 was being offered of-fered in Salt Lake that Lopez had escaped. es-caped. It was reported that soveral members of the posso that went in for tho search had put up money on tho i bet, feeling confident that Lopez could not havo escaped and would bo found, I dead' or alive. It will probably tako at loast soveral hours today ana possibly tho eutire i da to search tho remaining portions i of tho vast underground workings of tho Apex property. Ycstorday the Phoenix mino was not oven reached, and also govcral other tunnels and' stopes. The searchors wore still confident confi-dent last night that thoy would find Lopez, despito tho persistent feeling that tho Mexican desperado managed to oscape after the killing of Ilulsey and Manderich a wook ago today. Tho first searching party entered tho mino through the main or Parvenu tunnol at 2:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon. after-noon. The ton men were headed by Foroman Thomas Hosking of the Apex mine. With him were Superintendent V. S. Rood of the Apox mine; S. S. Jones, an engineer whose knowlodee of tho mino has mado him an invaluable' truidc; Dr. F. E. Straup,Dr.. David Ray,1 Gny Dc Ford, Ray Claves, Thra Rohwoitzor. George Chandler and L. M. Kellv. All of them arc residents of Binehnm and none of thorn officers except ex-cept Schweitzer, who is a special dop-uty dop-uty in tho employ of tho Utah Copper company. At the Andy tunnel tho first posse was I Joined by another consisting of Shift' Bobs Samuel Rosors. Asitlstant Shift I Boss Peter Toblnson. Peter Sltovlch. John ! Prntlch. Joe Bollch. The party which entered the mine yesterday yes-terday began It nearch at tha Parvanu j tunnel , Kolnpr Into that working for a dls-j dls-j tance of 3750 feot. Thts cage was then I taken to the 700-foot level and ladders ; wero then used to gel Into the Louisa i stone. The pose procet?ded up this slope j for u distance of about fifty feot to the 1 Andy incline and up the Incline for two ! hundred feet to the western Btopo or -100-foot level. After briefly searching this level the party continued up the Incline to the 'Andy tunnel at the 300-foot' level, where lapaln the search was directed briefly to i either side of the incline. Nothing was j found and the posse continued up the incline in-cline toward the Minnie level. About fifteen feet up the Incline from 1 the Andy tunnel three empty platol shells were found. The sholls were tho i same kind as were found Insido the bar- rlcado In which Lopez concealed hlmfielf in the Lake mountains when he fought his battle with the deputies. About twenty-rtve feet further up threo 30-30 rife shells were picked up. This point waa within twenty feet of whore the bodies of Hulsey and Manderich wero found, indicating the short distance the bandit shot when ho killed the two men. 1 Nearby Hulsey's revolver was picked up. I Tho shells ajid revolver wero found by I S. S. Jones, a member of tho party. Examined Workings. Tho searchers made a rrJnuto examination examina-tion of the working ul this point and came to tha roncltifclon that on the day of the ahootlng of Hulstiy nnd Manderich tho Mexican was first In the Andy tunnel tun-nel about 100 feet from the incline and in the No. 7 otopo. It was at thla atopo that the. Area wero first built. It In be lieved that when tho fires were built Lopez Lo-pez retreated into the stope and followed It upward and around a curve which IpadH into the Andy Incline. Then It Is thought he went down the Incline but a short distance when he. caw Hulsev, Manderich Man-derich and Dr. Ray coming up 'the Incline In-cline on a higher lodge to construct another an-other fire. Waiting until they were almost al-most opposite hitn he fired with deadly effect. Lopez is thon thought to have, cone JPV'n, Incline to the place whore tho plHioI shells were found. Here he engaged en-gaged In his underground duel with the deputies which concluded with their shooting out tho lights and leaving the tunnel. The bandit's movements from this point are unknown, it Is possible that he may havo continued down the incline in-cline to the 700 level and perhaps escaped es-caped from the portal of that tunnel or to hove gone down a shaft and reached the lower workings and -ono out of tha mine wun miners. Cave-in Found. From tho sceno of the shooting the searchers yesterday continued up the Andy incline to the Parnell or 100-foot level Thero the mouth of tho incline and Parnell tunnel were found to b blocked by a cave-In. v he..cv vc"J!n' accrdlng to mine officials, ??d ?V.cr bccn- a n'lt"ral one caused by the falling of weakened timbering or might have been rau?d by Lopez nrylnir oOHfc the timbering with the idea of blocking block-ing off a section of tho tunnel so that ho might escape tho smoke. The former supposition sup-position is believed to bo th most orob-ablo orob-ablo by men who aro familiar -with the mine. The danger of tho latter move to Lopez himself is the chief argument against the Idea of Lopez having caused the cave-In. The searchers then retraced their steps to the Minnie tunnel and left the mine. Guards were stationed In the Andy Incline at the Point of the cavc-ln and at a point ICO feet Inside the Minnlo portal, cither guardH were stationed at the points where Incline crosses the Andy tunnel, the 100-foot level and tho 700-foot love and at all portals of tho mino. Guards alono wero not relied on at tho portal to the Parnell tunnel, and a bulkhead bulk-head was reconstructed thero Today all parts of the mino with tho exception of that blocked by the cavo-ln jvlll he explored Should no trace o? the wmd b 'und. the rarnell bulkhead will then be removed and a plan dovls for getting through the cavc-ln Into , fh Parnell tunnel. n Ini lno |
