BOISE, July 22. ;Thc women of the stato pf Idaho aro highly Indignant and literally speaking "up in arms" over the purported statement of Mrs. Fred T. Dubois of Blackfool, Ida., wife of former United States Senator Dubois, to the effect ef-fect that 'so far 'women have brought about no reforms In western states." Mrs. Dubois was speaking of tho woman suffrage suf-frage movomenl In the west and was frcelv quoted In a Dos Moines. la., paper. Idaho, and particularly Boise, suffragists suffra-gists assert that Mrs. Dubois Is not familiar fa-miliar with western conditions and the advancement made by Idaho, Oregon, Utah. Washington and other western states If she asserts that: women luive not played an Important part In making reforms possible. Tho women who aro familiar with what members of their sex havo accomplished, not only in this stato, through the power of the ballot, but more particularly what thev havo done In tho neighboring cities of Idaho Falls and Blackfoot. near where Mrs. Dubois resides and whore she has been during tho past few years, aro wondering won-dering how the news of It has escaped her' Child Labor Law. Through their ballots tho women of Blackfoot, Idaho Falls and other cities in the southeastern part of this stato havo forced civic Improvements that would havo taken years to bring about n the natural courso of events. And in, civic righteousness thoy have stood rpro-rnost. rpro-rnost. It Is claimed They were particularly particu-larly active during tho passage of the child labor law. Mrs. Dubois Is not. a native of Idaho but has been a resident of this state for a number of years and during that time she has been in a position to seo woman suffrage mado a posslbllty and women take not only an active part in tho handling hand-ling of public affairs but in tho administration admin-istration of public office. In her Des Moines Interview she stated that not onlv had women of tho west not brought about reforms but their Influence had not been felt. Tho wlfo of the former Lnlted States senator of this state has boon closely Identified with the conservation of tho child through work of the Mothers' congress, con-gress, of which she Is ono of the western officers. She has assisted In tho passage pass-age of reform juvenile laws In this state and the segregation of the reform school from that of tho school for Indigent children. , Fellow Workers Angry. But apparently all of the reforms for which Mrs. Dubois has worked ha.ve gone for nothing, judging from the resentment shown by her fellow workers hero In their Indignation over her reported stato-incnt stato-incnt given out at Des Moines. "We have always pointed with admiration admira-tion and pride to the wonderful achievements achieve-ments of the women of Blackfoot, Idaho Falls and other nearby cities, and now to have their splendid work dismissed In this cool manner by Mrs. Dubois is exceedingly ex-ceedingly distasteful to us of Boise, and what must It be to the people of her own city." commented one of tho leaders of the woman suffrage movement here. These and other expressions are heard among the other woman suffrage loaders of tho capital city who aro chagrined to think that their state would bo so pictured pic-tured with reference to the reforms they have worked for arc concerned, to the middle west. Mrs. Dubois, to all appearances, ap-pearances, has stirred up .a hornets' nest among thoso of her own sex. |
