Show SOCIETY WOMEN TO NAVIGATE THE AIR prediction Made That Fashionable Buds Will Soar in Flocks Over Newport Next Season. By Leased Wire to Thc Tribune. NEW YORK, July 22. Aeroplanes driven by society buds will soar In flocks over NewDort and Narragansott Pier next season. Is the prediction made to day by Miss Harriet Qulmby, a woman a.vIator. Mhis Qulmby. who has taken up aviation avia-tion seriously, is convinced that society women will adont flying as a fad. If nothing more, as soon as they appreciate appre-ciate how easily and how little real danger dan-ger attends it. "You see." sho said, "the chief obstacles ob-stacles In thc path of the averago uer-son uer-son who would like to fly Is the expense attached to the sport. A machine alone costs $11000 and then there Is almost another an-other thousand that must be spent In learning the art. But expense does not figure with society folk and so when they onco realize how easy It Is to learn to fly and how safe and enjoyable the sport really Is, they will take to it like a duck does to water. "Of course I do not mean to say that flying Is absolutely devoid of danger, for no real snort Is. But It Is my belief that most of the acoldonts and fatalities fatali-ties that havo occurred In the fame have been due entirely to overconfldenco on the part of the aviator. I think this Is proven by the fact that a majority of those killed have been experts. Thc beginners be-ginners rarely lmv serious accidents." As evidence of her idea of dangers in aviation, sho said she would much pio-fr pio-fr driving her monoplane In an ordinary ordi-nary wind than driving an automobile down Fifth avenue on a busy afternoon. |
