Show CHURCH ORGAN VENOM. Tho church organ seizes with avidity another opportunity of its own making to lie again about Tho Tribune.- It says that The Tribune endeavored to make it appear that tho president of the church, in his opening address, made tho statement that eleven hundred plural plu-ral marriages were coptracted last year. Prceiscl' tho reverse is true. Wc said that ho couldn't mean that. The Tribune copied tho Deserel News's report of what the president said with regard to that maltor. Wc put no construction upon it at all. On the coutrar- wo said that it was incredible in-credible that so many plural marriages could havo occurred, and it was in credible; wo noted that President Smith must, in part at least, have meant something else. But, what clso it was that he meant did not appear. The church organ's report, which wc copied exacth', did not state what he meant otherwise, and as he proceeded at once to talk about plural marriages, it seems as if he must have meant those in part, just as wo said. "Eleven hundred marriages were con 1 tracted last year not in accordance with the law of God," said President Smith; and he continued immediately, "As announced time and again at these conferences, plural marriages have ceased in the church." And as he was disclaiming and continued to disclaim all responsibility of tho church for plural marriages, it sooms to us that tho langungo fairly construed indicates that ho must havo meant to Include in the 1100, all forms of marriago not Countenanced by tho church, including plural marriages. Tho Tribuno had not the least idea of misrepresenting President Smith in this matter. On tho contrary, it was careful care-ful to get his exact meaning. Tt copied tho official organ's wording just as it gavo it; aud sinco plural marriages were mentioned in tho samo connection as other marriages not countenanced by the church, it was not wrong to so consider con-sider his statement. And it seems that fho News attack upon The Tribuno is clearly malicious and vindictive. However, How-ever, the News falsehoods with regard to Tho Tribune and ils -venom against this paper aro so well known, that no one of any snnso will pay the least attention at-tention to its virulent ravings. The Trihuno floated Prcsidont Smith fairly in this matter as anyono can sec who mad fho oxlract which wo gave, and tho commi'ut. made upon it. The News simply shows its malicious hate, and The Tribune cares nothing about that I "Why do the heathen rage and imogino a vain thing?" Tho answer is, because be-cause they aro heathen, and hate thoir follow beings and all of the human race that do not come into thoir particular fold. |
