A new i species of cotton insect has been dis-eovered dis-eovered in cotton fields in the viclnitv , of Bcrclalr. near Houston, which is causing the entomological department of the state mixed concern and pleai'urf'. Although the mission of the new insect has not been definitely determined, ex- I perts declare it is the latest enemy io I the droaded boll weevil, against which J a united campaign will be made through- I out the cotton states this season. 1 The new cotton insect Is described as ! a 'long, double worm, that hops." Investigation In-vestigation has been made in nlher fields widely separated from the 13er-I 13er-I clalr plantations, but no traces of the 1 worm can be found. From the lime of its discovery near Eerclair it has thrived rapidly and appears to outgrow the weevil. Some of the state entomologists are uncertain as lo the friendliness of the worm, which they brand new pest. Recent Investigations. however, have ahown the worms destroy the larvae of tho boll weevil, although they do not attack the Insects themselves. |
