Show Low Rates to Boston Likely. Radical reductions In the excursion fare from Chicago to Boston and other eastern cities are likely io result this summer, owing to the dissensions between be-tween eastern railroads over the rates lo be granted for the convention of the National Educational association at Boston Bos-ton in July. These rates now have been subject to agitation, both in and out of the passenger passen-ger ofllcers' meetings, for several months heightened by the rivalry between the Grand Trunk and tho strictly United States lines, and to a curtain extent between be-tween the roads east and west of Chicago. Chi-cago. After the eastern trunk lines rate of a fare and a half for the round trip had been rejected by the National Educational Educa-tional association with a. thrcai. to hold the convention on the Pacific coast, and lo act ept the offer of some of the western lines of a single fare for tin- round trip. V. K Davis, passenger traffic manager of Die Grand Trunk, served notice Dint that line would make a rate of one fare for the round trip on the certificate plan. Since that lime the other eastern lines have been trying to figure how they could gel some of the business induced by the- convention, which lias amounted lo as many as :!5,000 persons, without cult Ing their rate to New York. New Jersey and other points of summer travel which could be reached by Boston at less than the regular fares. The alternative presented to Hie other roods Is to let the Grand Trunk have the business, make the same kind of a nitc. or open the rates to the general public without regard to certificates. The question bus been postponed until the March meeting1 of the Central Passenger association. |
