Show WOODROW WILSON WINS ON THE FIRST BALLOT TRENTON, N. J.. Sept. 15. The Democratic state convention today nominated nomi-nated Dr. Woodrow Wilson, president of Princeton university, for governor of New Dr. Wilson was nominated on tho first ballot and received forty more votes than was necessary to nominate him. The platform adopted was in line with the Democratic platform of three years ago. except that it was more specific in advocacy ad-vocacy of reforming measures, Including the conferring of rate-making power upon tho present public utilities commission. Dr. Wilson accepted the nomination and made an address which was highly pleasing to the delegates. After discussing tho platform. Dr. Wilson Wil-son said: "There are three great questions before be-fore the people reorganization and economy econ-omy in administration, equalization of taxation, and the control of corporations, "Other important questions are tne proper liability of employers, tho question ques-tion of corrupt practices in elections, and the question of conservation. "Our system of government should not be necessarily complicated and elaborate and there should not be too many separate sepa-rate commissions and boards" Discussing the question of corporations, tho speaker said: "Corporations should nol be favored In the matter of taxation. The power tp regulate taxation and llx rales should be vested In a public utilities commission commis-sion The regulation of corporations Is much more the duty of the state than of the federal government. In concluding his speech. Dr. Wilson "The playing of politics Is lo be deprecated. depre-cated. Measures having for their object the betterment of our conditions should be conceived in the largest spirit and urged by leaders who are statesmen and not demagogues." |
