Show A RIDICULOUS COMMITTEE. The Congressional committee investigating investi-gating charges against Mr. Ballingor, the Sccretao' of tho Interior, ia making mak-ing itself ridiculous in both branches before tho country. The regular meeting of the committee was called at St. Paul during the session ses-sion of tho Conservation Congress to make up its findings. Bur. the chairman of tho committee, with such of the "regular" Republican members as wero present, had to sneak and dodge to keep away from the session of the committee. In their absence, although they were in the city, the minority members, comprising com-prising four Democrats and one "insurgent" "in-surgent" Republican, passed resolutions condemnatory of tho Secretary. The chairman thereupon issued a warning that this was not the decision of the committee, which of course' everyone knows,. and called a meeting o the full committee for Chicago. At that meeting meet-ing the Democratic members played the same dodge that the Republican members mem-bers did at St. Paul. They refused to attciid, and held that their conclusion renched in St. Paul must bind tho committee. com-mittee. Without their attendance, a quorum could not .be had, and so an adjournment was taken. The whole matter, therefore, is in the air, with the Democrats having a tactical tac-tical ndvantnge and tho Republicans made oven more ridiculous beforo the country than the Democratic members are. When such childish procedure as this is indulged in by grave and dignified digni-fied Senators on both sides of the political po-litical fence, then it is no wonder that the country' has lost its respect impartially impar-tially for all of them. |
