Show I 1 , Registration at the University J4 Brings in More Prospective i Football Stars. I J j 'v "TJLLIE" 0LES0N READY j. C !' FOR FRESHMAN PLAYERS If! .. ; ; ,., former Coach Joe Maddock Will j - Aid in Preparing for Denver Game. I ! ' On Thursday, which was the llrst day 1 J , of-registration at tho "U.," about nlncty- j live students applied for udmlsslon. Most ( , of theso are freshmen. Among them are "Bish" Watson wlio played a star i game of football as tacklo on Ogden high school for the last few ycurs. Coach 13en-nlon 13en-nlon regrets that Watson won't bo eligible eligi-ble for the varsity team the coming year because of the freshman rule, but c)asse3 I , him ns good material for next year. i( With Watson aro Greonwald and Bar- I ker, also of Ogden high school fame. With the exception of need Wimtncr, t these men arc the lirsl of "Tlllle" Olc- ' son's freshman squad Jo make their ap- , , pcurance on tho campus, but a better be- ' ginning couldn't be made. I, :' - "Tillio" Is "Fussing." I' ' 1 "Tillle" Olcson himself was on the campus and registered for a course in I' ' "fussing." He is bigger and better na- I ,1 tured than ever, and his enthusiasm over I I the prospects of a champion freshman j team, which he is going to coach, is boundless. 1 He says that when it comes to scrim - i ' i' mage the varsity eleven will havo to play I 'i hard to hold the honor of being state , champions and that high school teams I , . will have no show whatever when they compote with the "U." freshmen. ; Captain 'Tiny" Homo received a let- l ter from former Coach Joe Maddock j Thursday. It was read to the squad. as it pertained principally to football and r ' Utnh'a chances under tho new rules. ' I Maddock promised to be on hand himself i! before the game with Denver univcr- i , hlry. f j .loe believes that the new rules nre an 1 Improvement. They eliminate unncces- i' sary danger and make quick,- heady playing nnd stratagem the llrst osaon- , t litis to a winning team. Joe has lost none of his love for the old school that has been brought into athletic proml-' proml-' nence by his own hard, uphill fight. Joe knows tho kind of material that Coach , ' Bennlon has to nick from this year and expressed himself as having all kinds of confidence In the squad. ' The latest additions to the squad arc j " More Material. Leslie Paul, Otto Bomney and Walter Gaby. Paul was a forward on the sec-. sec-. ond basketball team last year and has I ilwuys shown up well in class ath- 'l . . letlcs. Ilomncy played a fast game at l end on the freshman team last year and 1 i ' proved himself particularly adapted to I catching forward passes. As yet Gabv i is an unknown. At the Salt Lake high , li school he was on the track team, but has . " iad very little experience at football. Bennlon devotes most of the practices at present to teaching every man on the .1 c line to catch forward passes as well as to mako the passes. A few plays have been given, but no signals. .Monday afternoon signal practice prac-tice will bogin and the men who don't how up well will Just lose that much chanc of making the team. Coach Bennlon Ben-nlon desires only men that are workers and to be passed as workers they must be ready to practice on lime. |
