Show Parson Simpkin on Early Closing Editor Tribune I ask for space to say a word to the readers of The Tribune regarding tho anovemcnt for early Saturday Satur-day closing. In company with a. committee of Indies from the City club much work has been done In interviewing the merchants. Generous rcudlncss has been found on the part of tho merchants to respond favorably, fa-vorably, and every lending house lu the dry goods, millinery, ladles' cloak and suit houses agreed to close, Tho greatest, reluctance to come Into the movement Is manifested by the smaller stores, especially the State street stores. One feels tho justice of a part of their plea In regard to the accommodation of working men and their families. Jfowpvcr, the large stores, paying hoaw I taxes und so largely representing the charitable givers to all causes, cannot I afford to lei the field lie open to the r smaller stores. j There is only ono fair American remo- ' dy. It Is In the hands of tho peoplo of I tho city. Salt Lakers must either all get the I early shopping habit, refusing to do. any I late shopping, for tho protection of thosn M who havo had tho generosity and courage a to closo their houses at 6 o'clock: or, In E self-defense, the large stores must protect themselves. Thanks are due The Tribune for Its I warm support of the movement and to these merchants for their action. t With the hope that Salt Lake's thought- jj fill people will compel the continuance of this movement by their habit and In- ' fluencc, 1 am sincerely yours. r I'ETUR A.
