DETERMINED TO ARREST THIRD MAN, W POSSIBLE Varus Published in Disregard of Facts Are Without Foundation. "Regardless of what, ma- ho said by Thornc and Hays at this time regarding the published photograph of Morgan, Morgan is the man we want and ho is the ory one wo are going to get. if it is possible to get him. This department has positive evidence connecting Mor gan with the murder, and ho has been positively identified as the lookout who was with Thorno and Hays." Questioned regarding the story in the Herald-Republican which appeared on April .1, ChieC oC Detectives George-Sheets George-Sheets made the foregoing statement Friday afternoon and in response lo further questions, added: 1 "Reputable persons, one of whom is Mrs. -'. N. Boyd, the -wife of V. X Boyd, the delivery man employed at the Fassell store, saw'Morgan a few minutes before the holdup and murder in company com-pany with Thorno and Hays. The throe men wero on their way to the store when they passed Wis" Boyd. Mrs. Boyd had known Morgan for a number of years nnd her identification was positive. posi-tive. Other persons are equally positive in their statements that Morgan was tho man in compnuy with Thornc and IIay3 just prior lo the shooting. On Reputable Evidence. "When it eomcs to believing two stories, one coming from such characters charac-ters as Thorno and Hays, men of such a caliber that they would not stop even at murder, and tho other story coming com-ing from persons of unquestioned repute, re-pute, this department will nlwrys placo tho greater weight on statements made hy reputable persons. "When Thorno and TIays wero first taken to the police station on the night of the arrest, they lied right and left, and "Hays even denied for two hours that ho had committed the holdup or had been an3'where near the store on the night in question. This he did in the face of tho written and sigued confession confes-sion of Thome. Hays Positive About Morgan. "When ITays had, thought over the situation and had seen no loophole of escape, he thon confessed, but still refused re-fused to sign tho confession. Even though Thornc and Havs deny that Mor- f;an was their accomplice they are mere y doing what countless numbers of criminals do in every city in the Union when ouo of their pals escape and they themselves are arrested. ' 'Iicgardloss of tho statements of any person, wo have positive cvidenco connecting Morgan with the crime, and showing beyond question that ho was tho man who was scon with Thornc and Hays. This evidenco is not for publication publi-cation at the present time, but this department de-partment would not, for a moment pub lish a man's photograph on a descriptive descrip-tive circular charging him with murder, and flood the country with those circulars cir-culars if we were not positive of our facts. Morgan is the man wo want and are going to get, if possible." |
