With j; the Pitcher Winning His Own Game. I; 9, 1 The Salt Lake baseball loam defeated ' the Tdnho Falls nine Sunday nftcrnoon at the Walker field, In one of tho most cx- ; 'i'.1 citing nnd Interesting gnmcs seen played j on tho local diamond, by the close score !jV ,; of o to 2, in a ten-inning pitchers' battle, !;H' , ' before a crowd of about 500 people. Whilo 4 the same draped a little, owing to the ,j V hIow but effective, work of Barnard in tho , j j, box for Salt Lake, there were many good ' J plays pulled off, and all the boys played fi t i fast ball all tho time. ' Salt Lnko was the first to score, Scan- !j f , lan walked and reached the homo plate tyll-ll on two errors. The Fecond baseman W h failed to Held his position. A perfect rj- , throw bv Fuller to second base to catch Jj , Scanlan "stealing wont Into center field. r Scanlan continued to third base and Chic" Johnson threw into tho bleachers, f 1 allowing tho runner to score. The Idaho , ' , team tied the score in tho second Inning, j ' I Harmon walked, stole second, went to V 'it third on Schlosscr's single nnd came home J on "Chic" Johnson's single. C. Johnson t and Roschor retired the side, grounding fi , pitcher to ilrst. There was nothing do- ' j ing then until the seventh inning. "Chic1 h Johnson got to tlrst. hit by pitcher, but was put out at second on a fielders choice. Barnard to Castro. C. Johnson ' ' getting safelv to first. Fuller fanned, nascher broke the monotony with a threo-ba.se hit to left field, which scored 1 ' C. Johnson- Changnon retired tho side on n ground hit to short, which was relayed to first. Looks Like Cinch. I' Salt Lake was shut out in the seventh, as well as in the eighth, and it looked like n cinch for Idaho. In tho ninth In- 1 nlng Stewart drovo a hot 6ne to short- , stop, who made a bad throw to first, nnd r "Dnd" was safe. Scanlan sacrificed, ad vancing Stewart to second. Scott, who ' 1 had not hit the ball up to this time, enmo up and drovo a pretty single to right field, nnd Stewart scored, tying tho score, 2 to 2. The tenth Inning proved a trying one for Barnard and It looked as If Idaho would surely win. Changnon w.if the v first man up and he reached first on a throw by Castro nnd went to second base. Barnard then made n wild pitch and Changnon went to third. Hicks was hit and was given free transportation. Ho stole second. Collins struck out, Harmon ' came to bat and the local boys drew a long breath, as the hardest hitter of the visiting team was up. Harmon hit tho olm.l T.lnrcroHQ milfTprl hilt. I. ' , (illicitly recovering, threw out Changnon j at the home plate. This made matters A look a little better. Schlosscr came up nnd hit to Castro, who put him out at first, as well as the side. It was the ' most trying inning of the entire game. ' but the locals behaved splendidly. T. Gunn started In the wrong direction in the last half of the tenth for Salt Lake". , ' Ho hit to left field, right into the mitts of C. Johnson. McNac got to first on nn error bv short on a ground ball, and went ' to third on a wild throw by Fuller to second, trying to cut oft a steal. Castro ; fanned and Barnard camo to the bat. Ho I had dono nothing with the stick up to J this time, and It looked like eleven in- I nings. Collins throw the ball and Bar- i nard soaked It to second base- so fast 7 that Hicks did not know for the instant what had happened. Barnard got to first with the ball, scoring McNae and win-'. win-'. nlng his own game. 1 Barnard Is Feature. The feature of the game was the pitch-x pitch-x ing of Barnard and Collins. Salt Lake only got three hits off Collins, but these came at a time when needed. Barnard struck out fourteen men nnd had five assists, as-sists, lie used the spit ball to perfection perfec-tion and had his opponents at his mercy at all times. Ho got out of several tight holes, and while the visitors touched him J up for six hits, these were so scnttercd that they did not do much good. The visitors probably lost the game on cr- j rors, two of Salt Lake's runs being I scored on errors. There was not an earned run In the game. ' It was laughable to see Barnard use ' the spit ball. He had a big "cud" of slippery elm, chewing away llko an old-( old-( timer, and he kept the ball well soaked. ' ! As the ball shot over the plate, the bat-( bat-( ters were either fooled with an uncxpect-, uncxpect-, cd curve or blinded with saliva, which flew from the ball like so much rain. Catcher Scott used up two yards of sand ' i in keeping his glove dry. . ( The score: ( SALT LAKE. t , AB. R. BH. PO. A. 13.
