Work on the Lake Washington ship canal, designed de-signed to give Seattlo o. fresh water harbor, har-bor, will begin within sixty days. Major C. W. ICutz. chlof of L'nited States engineers, yesterday awarded tho contract for tho preliminary excavations between Union Bay and r.ako Union. For forty years Seattlo has hoped nnd fought for this canal. Once It wao Iho Ihsuo on which a state cnmpalgn was fought, and John H ISIcGraw was elected governor on a canal platform. The- canal will bo 72 feet wide at the bottom and 100 feet wide at tho top, and will be about 12000 foot long. It will lowor Lake Washington soveral feet and permit the reclamation of valuable shore lands. |
