Encampment. United Stales Senator George Sutherland, Suther-land, -junior senator from Utah, arrivon here late Monday evening. In response to an inquiry whether the matter of the United Stales marshal-ship marshal-ship would be taken up at this tunc, ho replied that nothing would be done in the matter until his return to Wasli-ington. Wasli-ington. , x, Senator Sutherland expressed the opinion that the tariff oil lead, wool, hides and sugar, the four principal products of Utah, would probably not be changed. The contemplated reduction reduc-tion on lead, he said, which applied only to pig lead, and reduces the tariff from 2V, cents per pound to 1 2 cents per pound', would probably not be made. The reduction 011 wool, which applies only to tho coarser grades, and was slight in that instance, would also not be made, he thought. Hides, which had been placed on the frco list, would also be given tho old rating, and sugar would bo left as it is. Fort Douglas improvements. j Tho senator spoke of the improve- 1 ments which would be made on the Fort Douglas military reservation out of tho appropriations obtained from congress. 1 and which would involve the expenditure expendi-ture of over $100,000. Theso improvements improve-ments would place the post iu first-class first-class condition aud give it the standing of a full regimental post. Five new doublo barracks will bo constructed at an expense of $07.000. Doable lieutenants' quarters will bo constructed nt a cost of $.l(J.000, and oilier new quarters, including a quartermasters' quarter-masters' storeroom houses for fire apparatus. ap-paratus. A much-needed electric light plant to replace the present system of lighting 13 oil lamps will be installed a a cost of $33,000. Bids for these new improvements will be advertised for aud contracts let In- the middle of Mny. The completion of these new buildings will leave only tho remodeling remodel-ing of the officers' quarters to put the place in first-class condition. Senator Sutherland also expressed the opinion that Presidcut Taft would be present nt the coming forty-third national na-tional encampmeut of the G. A. R. "He is very anxious to come." lie said, "but there seem to bc several obstacles in the waj- of his being prosent. Although Al-though the trip is not decided upon at the present time, 3 think that he will probably be here, but this can not be announced definitch' until later." The senator's visit to the state will occupj- about ten days, most of which will be spent iu this city. |
