attracted no little attention monday morning and a few hours later the somewhat historic spot was quite lively scone a first class case of attempted land jumping having boon developed on friday last john H linck formerly of colorado springs had thirty two acres of land situated on arsenal hill and immediately east of the old city wall sun eyed divided into two large lots and monday morning filed the survey with the county recorder this land belongs of course to the city and marshal solomon was considerably surprised monday morning to learn that a large force of men were engaged in fencing in the property he immediately went up to the hill and notified T E higgins who represents mr linck to stop work no attention was paid to this and the workmen about thirty in number continued putting up posts about 3 in tho afternoon marshal solomon again appeared with officers pickett J V burt barlow pratt bateman johnson smelt and sheriff burt and again told higgins that the work must be stopped at once higgins asked the marshal if he had any authority for making such an order and the latter replied that the land belonged to the city which was authority enough As higgins declined to order tho men to quit work the marshal without further ado set the officers to work pulling up the which wore immediately loaded into wagons and taken down to the city hall yard higgins then loft but returned in about an hour and told his men to go along behind the police and put up the posts as fast as they were torn down but when tho officers informed the men that if they did so they would bo arrested they declined with the exception of a young man named hayward who at higgins order commenced to put up a post which the officers had taken down he was placed under arrest and higgins then left the officers to finish their work and in a very short time the posts all down it seems that another crowd represented by J M kennelley got wind of what was going on and mr kennelley camped on one of the lots sunday night and lincks men found him in possession monday morning he was having a board shanty erected on this lot when the officers appeared knocked the shanty down and carried the lumber off to the city hall all of the policemen together with marshal solomon were afterwards arrested by deputy vandercook Yan dercook on a complaint sworn to by mr linck charging them with arresting a man without lawful process officers appeared before commissioner nor ryll and were released upon their own recognizance to appear for trial thursday A reporter called upon mr linck monday night for the purpose of ascertaining upon what grounds he expected to hold the property mr linck said that the ground had never been claimed by any occupant and was held in trust by the mayor it had never been platted and rethinks bethinks be thinks that he can hold it legally when the jumping became known it created considerable excitement around town and was the subject of general discussion the universal opinion is that the jumpers have not a ghost of a chance to hold the land and they are likely to find in tho end that they have indulged in a very foolish and expensive pastime the salt lake herald on wednesday says that tho report of the attempted jumping of city lands situated on arsenal hill created no little excitement in town tuesday and a largo number of journeyed up to the hill choro they found mr lincks men busily engaged in resetting the posts which the police had torn down on monday most of tho property is now fenced in barb wire having been strung around the posts air kennelley is still in possession of ono of tho lots claimed by tho linck party and says that ho had the lot surveyed three days bafaro the lindas survey was made ho has put up a tent on the lot and evidently intends to camp there another big jump was mado tuesday afternoon when 0 E mitchner and C B durst took possession of a 40 aero track situated immediately north and of the lots fenced in by the link party they ly commenced to benco in alio tract and several wagon loads of posts and building material was taken up during the afternoon richards Kic hards co have laid claim to a lot rods of the tract being fenced in by mitchner and durat and claim that they were first on the ground later in the day george adkins had the whole tract claimed by mitchner and durst surveyed and expects to hold it on parties of jumpers now lay claim to this tract marshal solomon rode up to the scene of action during the afternoon and again ordered all parties to quit work and remove their material from the ground no attention was paid to this order and it is said frame buildings will bo erected today to day the following notice will bo put up on the ground lands consisting of lots numbered one 1 and two 2 and the half of section thirty 30 and all of section thirty one 31 in town one 1 north of range one 1 cast salt lake meridian not heretofore deeded and conveyed by the corporation po ration of salt lake city aro tho property of said corporation and all persons are hereby notified not to trespass or enter upon said lands or in any way place boles fences posts or buildings thereon of any character or jumpers remains to be seen yesterday mornings morn inge herald says that about forty more acres of arsenal hill land was jumped wednesday one track being taken by william glassman and another by a man named anderson a member of the salvation army nearly all of the property on the hill is now fenced in and five tents and two frame sheds have been put up hundreds of oer sons visited the hill drawn thither by curiosity alma 3 winn jumped the piece of city property known as the tenth ward square and filed with the probate court written notices that ho was in possession and asking that the mayor bo instructed to issue to him a deed upon learning that tho property had been jumped marshal solomon visited the place and found winn there a small force of lien engaged in plowing he ordered winn off the place but no attention was paid to him further particulars in tho matter will probably be developed it was learned wednesday evening that ahe land had been in 1873 adjudicated to daniel H wells mayor and his successors in office to be hold in trust for the uso and benefit of the inhabitants of this city just where tho land jumping craze will end remains to be seen wednesday evening it was rumored that some parties had their eyes on union square the old fort block and the washington square some Colora doan may yet come n and attempt to convert liberty park to his own use and benefit |
