Show THE JUMPERS JUMPED the mayor evicts alie land gratteri Grat TENTS SHANTIES AND FENCES TORN UP BY THE POLICE alie in quiet possession of the disputed land the land jumping case on arsenal hill was about the only topic on salt lake streets yesterday it was known to a few the evening previous that there were probabilities of lively timed on the hill yesterday morning and aliis being a sufficient hint a salt lake herald reporter was among the first to arrive at alie scene there he found four new white tents ditched on different portions of alie disputed property and high up on the hillside was a combination of boards by courtesy called a house from one of the tents a lady emerged evidently in the act of preparing breakfast near another a man with a very red face and very black whiskers was doing some very plowing off in the distance were half a dozen men engaged in digging post gioles across alie road eliat biad been used for so many years in order to gain access to the gravel beds on the hillside there was quite a businesslike business like air about all their movements and all were evidently unaware of alie bolt that was about to fall asked as to how they expected to square matters the city one of the fellows replied that he did know neither did they care they considered they biad alie city foul and cheerfully went on in their work of manufacturing poat holes alie first thing eliat caused the jumpers any uneasiness was the heaving into sight of a long line of carriages greatly resembling a funeral procession As alie buggies approached nearer the figures of mayor arm recorder alls sheriff burt marshal solomon and night watchman dobson were discerned and almost the entire police foce augmented by forty or fifty specials all ai aed and equipped closely following these but from another direction came a covered wagon filled with police guns etc and took up a position easy of access at about aliis time another cloud of policemen arose from the sage brush on the south end of alie jumped property and stood out boldly on alie horizon alie jumpers gazed in consternation for a few seconds but aliey were not destined to wait very long before discovering what was in store for them The ball was opened by mayor armstrong addressing an individual named mcdonald who was carefully toying with a posthole post hole and asking him by what authority he was present there the reply was made that he thought he had a right to be there the mayor then gave him formal notice that lie and all others were trespassing tres passing on city property and ordered him off mcdonald care to go except by the orders of a court having jurisdiction over the matter to aliis the mayor replied that the courts had no voice in alie case at present and eliat he delivered the order in the capacity of mayor mcdonald still demurred and at alie request of the mayor marshal Solo monand sheriff burt took hold of the bantam and led him across the line where ife remained as meek as a lamb in the meantime a tent near by was seized and hurriedly thrown over alie city wall leaving a posse of men here the mayor marshal and others proceeded to the tent where the lady was preparing breakfast and alie one near which a a fellow named george adkins was plowing adkins refused in a blustering manner to stir an inch the consequence was that he soon found himself between a couple of policemen and he was unceremoniously bounced the lady was notified eliat she must leave and she prepared to do so the gallant specials carrying her table bedstead and other household utensils outside the lines of the property jumped both these tents collapsed like balloons and with the wagons were soon hustled away another squad of police was left at thia point and the funeral procession as it had been humorously dubbed proceeded up the hill to the shanty at word from tho mayor several shoulders were placed against one end and with a suddenness that surprised even the be seigen the jumpers cabin fell scarcely two pieces of lumbar remaining fastened together here also a fellow showed that he was inclined to resit the authority of the guardians of the public peace and property but he finally concluded to get out leaving a steam of sulphur following in his wake on went the procession to the extreme end of the fence and on the return trip etrick the remaining tent which was brought down by the police together with axes shovels picks etc one fellow was out in the sagebrush aad near a piece of board stuck in the groundland ground and on which waa written william glassman and twenty others N E corner 1100 feet to linck at the request of the officers he picked up his bed and walked by this time quite a crowd had collected but with strict instructions to arrest every individual found on the disputed ground without authority rode away to alie tenth ward square where a foolish individual named alma H winn had jumped here were found a couple of young fellows in possession with bedclothes plows etc and they had plowed several furrows around the field the plow and the clothes were dropped over the fence and one of winns employees went to inform him of what had occurred oa one corner of the block was a placard reading as follows tins PROPERTY FOB SALE within inquire the notice came down in a hurry and leaving half a dozen of the heavy members of his force here the marshal and others left the herald man returned to arsenal hill where lie found the police hungry and dry but holding the fort against all encroachments encroach ments of the enemy at about 11 tom higgins Hi geins who it appears is a leading spirit in the jumping transactions drove rapidly up on to the ground in a second a policeman had grabbed the bridle of his animal and he was ordered back he obeyed the orders indulged in a little oratory to the admiring crowd of bums and then brov rapidly away meanwhile the force had been organized and divided being stationed at different spots on the 40 acre block but yet within easy call each new arrival brought up a different story aa to aliat the jumpers would do when reinforced by the united states marshal and his deputies the police were all to be arrested within fifteen minutes the marshal had sworn in new deputies and was coming to arrest every mothers eon who had participated in the knocking out of the jumpers even the spectators who had gathered to see the fun were to be arrested on some charge or other and possibly sentenced to long terms of imprisonment the fellow adkins aided and abetted by a tribune reporter who had arrived by thia time succeeded in gathering to gether a mob of the lolafern lo afern and as adkins poured forth his the scribe was a sympathetic listener his tale was a gory one he had according to his statement been picked up by marshal solomon and a man named barf who was even now under indictment for unlawful cohabitation and thrown through a barbwire barb wire fance As he made this flood curdling statement he exhibited a rent in hla prince albert which must have measured at least half an inch lone he felt the bamo spirit present he said that was present sixteen years ago when the cormons mormons were in the habit of slaughtering gentiles for food and saving their beef cattle to plow with or words to that effect he finally became so tiresome however that ean alie scribe left and the latter soon ard liis nose at a crack in the cover of j wagon containing arms and ammunition widen was shortly after driven away for this the newspaper man was roundly abused by mcdonald who told him that if it biad not been for his G d foolishness the wagon would have remained biere and when the marshals came I 1 intended to arrest all the G d s of b and take all their guns and ammunition a way from them again does mr H iggins burst upon the scene with the information that in fifteen minute the entire force would be under arrest and after leaving word with the working men to resume operations as oon soon s as the police were safely bagged by the deputies lie drove away an hour passed but no deputies appeared and that the arrests were to be made at 1 one came but no arrests followed and quite a number of spectators returned leaving the police in full possession about 3 marshal solomon and sheriff burt were arrested on a complaint signed by R mcdonaad McDo who charged that they biad been guilty of assault and battery in ejecting him from llie premises both were taken before commissioner nora 11 where they were released on tr own recognizance to appear for trial today to day at 10 mayor armstrong had a long confer j ence arith marshal dyer in the afternoon and mr peters and mr rawlins were also in close consultation during the day the result will probably be eliat an injunction will be asked for today to day rei straining the jumpers from taking any further steps until the question of title has been passed upon by the courts herald |
