Show HOKE SMITH BEATEN. Wo are glad to note the defeat of noke Smith of Georgia. Ho was elected elect-ed Governor of Georgia two 3'ears ago, and sought to succeed himself, but was defeated at the primaries by Joseph M. Brown, who gets 15,000 plurality over him. The people of Georgia woro ovidontb tired of Hoko Smith's hum-bugger3' hum-bugger3' and demaog3', and want a change. Besides, Brown is an honored name in Georgia, and tho Stato no doubt wants to return lo tho days of sincerity and straightforwardness. Hoko Smith is not unknown in Utah. Ho was President Cleveland's Secrotar3' of the Interior, and as such nullified tho law of Congress of 1S94 for tho opening of the Uintah reservation. Tho law provided for stops toward that opening, open-ing, but Hoko Smith refused lo tako them. It made an appropriation to do certain things preliminary to tho opening, open-ing, but Hoko Smith speut tho mono3r in giving some friends of his sinecure appointments to go to tho reservation, do nothing, and return homo when tho monc3' was speut. All of which was faithfully followed, and nothing was douo to carry out tho law which pro vided for tho opening of the rcserva t ion . Hoke Smith nnd his sort aro good men to keep in private life, whero thoy will havo no opportunity to betray public trust. Tho pooplo' of Georgia have got him booked for private lifo on tho expiration of his lorm, and they should keep him thcro thencoforth. |
