Eace feeling is at white heat and thrcnts of lynching are heard on ever- hand as a result of an assault committed on Mrs. T. S. Clifford, wife of a prominent phy- I sician, this afternoon b' a negro soldier sol-dier of tho 25th Infantry. Mrs. Clifford and hor sister, Mrs. S. IT. Clarke, wero attempting to pass the soldior when ho viciously grabbed Mrs. Clifford around the waist and threw her into tho street, exclaiming that tho sidewalk belonged to him. Mrs. Clarke screamed for assistance and the assailant assail-ant fled, escaping before help arrived. News of the attack spread rapidly and the entire police department, ro-in-forced by several hundred men and boys, searched the town and surrounding country, but this evening tho chase was given up, as the negro was in uniform, and he must return to tho post or soon becomo a deserter. Word was sent to Fort Eeuo and all absentoes noted. Both Mrs. Clifford nnd her sister are positive they can identif' the man ana will go to Port Reno tomorrow and attempt to pick him from tho soldiers who were out of the post today when the assault occurred. |
