The only excuse the' gave for permitting permit-ting the man to go was that ono of them sent a message to the Sheriff at Ogden that they had the man in custody custo-dy and that thoy received no reply from the Sheriff. The deputy sheriff at Price, seven sev-en miles below Helper, also received a telegram that night from Sheriff Sebring lo go to Helper and take the man in charge. Immediately upon receipt of tho telegram the deputy drove up to Helper, but beforo he arrived there the deputy constables had lot him go nnd tho excuse they offered was that which I have stated. ' Conditions at Price. Asked as to conditions at Price, Mr. Hill said: "Price is more active than for a long time past. There is considerable con-siderable stir in real estate, and a good deal of property changing hands. Tho people aro very jubilant over the work being done by the Utah Land and Reservoir company, The company has gone to work in earnest, and is now actively engaged in the construction of a reservoir which, -when completed, com-pleted, will irrigate thousands of ncros of the richest nnd most productive produc-tive land in the Stato. You see, some ' few months ago Fitzgerald Bros, of Chicago and D. !M. Landrcth of Colorado, Colo-rado, who has recently taken up his residence in Price, purchased tho old Mammoth reservoir, which was started to furnish water for 50,000 acres of land near Price, but which failed for the want of capital to mish it to completion. com-pletion. The new comoany has ample means with which to completo the work, and the land will now bo brought under irrigation just as soon as labor and material can accomplish it. Tho now company have entered upon this great enterprise as a business busi-ness investment, aud they realize the sooner the land can be rendered culti-vatablo culti-vatablo the sooner they will becin to realize on their holdings. This is tho biggest thing for Carbon county nnd eastern Utah that has ever boon undertaken, under-taken, and will bo the means of bringing bring-ing more money and permanent settlers into tho State than any other enterprise enter-prise that has over been started." Dry Fanning. Dry farming, Mr. Hill says, is receiving re-ceiving earnest attention, and tests aro being mado by himself and others. He thinks that dry farming in Carbon county can be mado to nay as well' as in other parts of the Stale. Mr. Hill and V. D. Livingston have taken a ton-year lease on the Elliot El-liot or -"Big Springs''' ranch, some miles east of Price. On this ranch arc 2000 acres under fence. Tho ranch, Mr. Hill says, will be devoted principally to the raising of blooded stock. The purpose is to make it the finest stock ranch in Utah. Tho ranch is being well equipped witli farm machinery, ma-chinery, and a $4000 steam plough has been ordered, their intention, being be-ing to raise several hundred acres of alfalfa and grain. Mr. Livingston will move his fino cattle from his stock farm in Sanpete county to the Big Springs ranch tho coming siring. |
