Show SAN FRANCISCO'S PROTEST. The city of San Francisco and tho Southern Pacific Railway company have Joined in issuing systematic protests pro-tests against the exaggeration which has become prevalent to the damage in the public estimation of tho business and the prospects of the coast. The San Francisco calamity gave rise to a eort of panic in the public mind which, it is assumed may act unfavorably upon the whole of the coast cities, and injure the business of tho whole State of California. Cali-fornia. But as the protest very Justly suys, "Nothing but the truth Is necessary to point out -that-no material industry, agriculture, horticulture, viticulture, mining, manufacturing, commerce, has suffered interruption or permanent In-Jury." In-Jury." This Is 'manifestly the case. Commerce, to be sure, would be interrupted inter-rupted to 'some extent and will continue to bo interrupted until San Francisco can restore sufficient of her warehouse facilities to handle what is pffered; but on tho other hand, as soon as the city is ready to fully resume, the ru3h of commerce in excess of the average will bo correspondingly great, because the city is to be rebuilt, and Industry will have an' activity that 1b unparalleled In the history of the-country. There have been many wild rumors in circulation about tho dangers in building build-ing up the cities of the coast region. These rumors have been intensified by "papers" of so-called scientists who un-dertakeMo un-dertakeMo point out an earthquake belt extending pretty much all along the ccast, in which these alleged scientists aver earthquakes aro liable to ovor-' ovor-' throw everything that man may put up, at any time. It Is probable that these sensational scientific papers, so called, have been responsible for more of the real distrust in tho public mind of the peril to Investments and of destruction de-struction to come in this alleged so-called so-called earthquake belt, than tho mcro fact of tho calamity In San Francisco and other cities further down, The fact that earthquake disturbances to any calamitous extent have been in fact wanting for tbe timo In which the habitation habi-tation of .that roglon has been known to mankind ought to quiet the fears of the sensationalists. The further fact as pointed but' by the efforts undertaken underta-ken by the city anjl the railway company, com-pany, to show that no material indus-' indus-' try or reliance of Califoanla has been i really interfered with, ought to dispel any distrust which remains in the public pub-lic mind. Tho Governor of California has alpo joined forces wfth the Interests above named, and has issued a statement to the Governors of other States, which certainly ought to have a strong effect in quieting the apprehensions of further fur-ther disaster in California. The Governor Gov-ernor points out that nothing 13 permanently perma-nently crippled. The city of' San Francisco Fran-cisco will bo rebuilt, and so will the other cities that were damaged by the earthquake and by fire, or by both. The great university buildings are all practically prac-tically Intact: "steamship wharfs at San Francisco are .not damaged; the great continental railways are already fully restored to tholr previous effective condition; con-dition; the efforts made by the conservative conser-vative and recuperative forces in San FianclBCo and Coilfornla are in full activity, and ought certainly to bo effective ef-fective to dispel the wild rumors and vagaries which have poisoned the public pub-lic mind to some extent against, investments invest-ments on the coast. On the whole, wo do not believe that any permanent Injury will be done San Francisco by the wild rumors that appear ap-pear at the present time to be a handicap handi-cap to the reouperatlon proposed. The fact is that the Government and the great financial Institutions of tho East tcok no stock in those wild rumors, but forwarded money by the scores of millions mil-lions to meet emergencies. There will probably be little default in the Insurance Insur-ance payments, and the prospects for San Francisco and th whole earthquake earth-quake region emerging stronger and more beautiful than ever from tho calamity cal-amity that for a time has overshadowed overshad-owed them, aro extremely bright. No one is likely to lose faith in California, and wo doubt If any Investor will long be held back by any damaging rumors. |
