Show BUT ONE ISSUE HERE. The Tribune maintains that at present pres-ent there Is no Republican party in Utah; and also that there is no Democratic Demo-cratic party. Tho only partisan activities activi-ties arc the American movement for faith-keeping, law observing, and tho freedom from control of politics and of civil affairs by tho church, on the on hand, and on the other the two branches of church activity, masquerading masquer-ading in successive years as Republic; Repub-lic; n or Democratic. That is, one political po-litical forco here is tingle, free, and American; the other Is double, the church in control of both, for its own lntorest and purposes. Is this Republicanism? Is It Democracy? Democ-racy? To say yes to either Question Is to libel the two great partfes of the country and to belle their records. Republicanism forfeits Its standing and betrays' its high mission when U thus puts itself at the service of a hierarchy, and bends Its knee to that power. Democracy equally repuJIates Its nam1 and the very heart of Its claims to popular service w.hen it yields Itself to the behests of a hierarchic ahBolut-lsm. ahBolut-lsm. This unlawful cohabitation of church and state; this depraved submission to political adultery, is an abomination to every thought of free Institutions. Where It exists, as it exists unquestionably unquestion-ably in Utah, It Is impossible that there should be any real Republican party or any real Jpemocratlo party. And while sham parties masquerading under un-der these names afflict Utah with their stench the fraud Is obvious; it is seen and known of all. . There is but one Issue in Utah; the issue of Amorlcanl6m against helr-archlc helr-archlc despotism. Any and-every party that stands for the latter Is ipso facto and necessarily a fraud on the name It bears. |
