Show WHITEWASH DB FOR UTIfllS Postmaster Will Not Lose His Scalp But Subordinates Subordi-nates Will. & UTAH CONGRESSIONAL ' DELEGATION BACKS HIM Clerks Will Be Offered as Sacrifice Sacri-fice to His Mismangemcnt of Office. Special to Tho Tribune , WASHINGTON. D. C, June C It Is now dcflnltoly understood that the influences influ-ences which have been at work In the behalf of Postmaster Thomas has been sufficiently powerful in a political way to 3hleld him and, whllo no ofllclal statement state-ment has yet been made at the department depart-ment of tho subject, no concealment Is made of the fact that Mr. Thomas will bo whitewashed and somo of his clerks will be dismissed. Silont About Kessler. The department Is strangely ollont concerning con-cerning Assistant Postmaster Kcsuler. One of tho officers In chargo of the department de-partment who is familiar with the case, said that It was very" ovldent that some new clerks were needed in tho Salt Lake postofllce to take the place of somo who were inefficient, and ho would suggest that If sufficient clerks could not be found In Salt Lake City, they ought to bo Imported. Im-ported. Active to Save Postmaster. Tho Utah dclegatlpn In Congress has been active in their efforts to save Postmaster Post-master Thomas. Before the report of the Postofflco Inspector had been submitted on Thomas's case the two Senators had mado trips 'to the department and made the ofllclal request that they bo fully advised ad-vised of every detail of the caso. Interferod at Every Step. The case was not allowed to proceed, as such cases usually do, along administrative admin-istrative lines, but there was Interference at every tep and suggestions ascribing to those who made tho chnrgos against the postmaster, motives of personal plquo. Thomas Will Escape. Whatever tho outcome of Mr. Kecno'o Investigation Is, It eccms to bo a foregone fore-gone conclusion that tho postmostcr will epeapo censure. It Is not so certain, however, how-ever, that a number of clerks will not bo offered up as sacrifice to tho popular cry against mismanagement In tho Salt Laky office. General Maladministration. It has not occurred to nnybody In ofllclal ofll-clal life, apparently, to hold the post-mastor post-mastor responsible for tho character of tho help of tho employees, or to make -him personally or officially responsible for the general maladministration of his ofllco. It had been the general rulo In ofllclal llfo hero that when thcro Is rottenness rot-tenness In a bureau, tho hureau chief, who Is supposed to bo familiar with the work of his office. Is held to answer a degree of responsibility In the matter. Politics Being Played. Somo very deep National politics are bolng played In tho Salt Lake postofllce mattor Just as thoro has boon In the Smoot caoe. The report of tho Investigation Investi-gation will probably bo mado public In a few days. |
